Ebay Scam For Indiana Jones Items.

Beware! There is a person on eBay that is trying to scam people into making Western Union transactions for Indiana Jones props. First item was a Wested Last Crusade Leather Jacket and now the second item is a David Morgan whip.

The person makes the Second Chance Offers outside of eBay from a domain payment-ebitem.com that was registered through Register.com today 02/22/08.

Always good to get warnings, but what makes you think it is a scam? (not saying it is not try, just curious to the reason - maybe it would help me spot these things myself)

1. I was the victim (although I didn't pay!)

2. The item was supposedly located in Switzerland but I was supposed to Western Union money to a person in Rome?

3. I was told that I was the Second Chance Offer outside of eBay Messaging.

4. Ebay confirmed that the email generated from ebay@payment-ebitem.com is a false email. I confirmed it by checking the register of the domain using WhoIs.com. This pointed me to Register.com/whois and that site confirmed that this domain name was registered on 02.22.08! Hmm! That is today!!!

5. Plus the eBay sellers pictures look awfully familiar! I have seen the same ones and with the same background floor tiles on other auctions/websites.

What tipped me off was the fact that I was contacted outside of eBay Messaging for Second Chance Offer. This process is automated through eBay and only occurs through eBay Messaging and not using commercial email. Just watch for this symptom.:unsure

Hope that helps and now I have to go find another Wested IJ jacket!:redface

Thanks for the heads up, and if this person is in Rome I could try to locate, and report him to the authorities... Just let me know!;)

I have attempted to contact the seller twice now through eBay and no response. On COW there was mention that often times individuals seek out those who are eligible for Second Chance Offers and pretend to be the seller.

This may be two different people but again I have not heard from the seller to verify that the messages I have been receiving are from him/her.

I have had this scam run on at least two of my recent auctions for Star Wars props. The crooks send the mark a private email "second chance" offer, usually saying that the winning bid had something wrong with it. They offer 'free shipping' to sweeten the deal, then ask for a Western Union payment to be sent some European country, though my auction specifically says I'm in Michigan. I'm amazed at how close both bidders came to falling for it. If they hadn't thought to email me through the proper eBay mail channels they could have lost hundreds.

Don't fall for this! Never accept an offer outside of eBay. And if it sounds too good to be true ($50 savings on shipping!) it probably is.

Excellent idea mate! This was the address in which he/she requested the Western Union transfer be sent!

I suggest you take your largest sword, flintlock, and bullwhip and whip some arse, savvy?

My co-worker's nephew was duped into sending over $4000 through Western Union for a motorcycle to some scammer in Rome. The bike was for listed on ebay for a New York seller and the nephew placed a bid but was out bid in the end. He got the "second chance offer" email outside of ebay for the bike and transferred the mony through WU. When he received no further emails from the seller, he had his father trace the WU transfer. Of course it lead to an Italian Western Union store address.

I ALMOST lost 600 Euro (900 bucks) on something like that, when a seller of a watch that a friend asked me to bid on, requested to use Western Union. I think e-bay should be more harsh on such betrayers, as it also hurts their own reputation.

Marc

Thanks for the tip!

Hopefully this person will get a visit from the police

Thanks for the heads up guys - I use ebay a little bit and am always afraid of getting the 'raw end of the stick' somehow.

Cheers

Thanks for sharing the info. We all need to be reminded of these scams from time to time.
