Dyeing Raw Silk

I have never dyed anything before but in order to get the green I want (to make Mara Jade's green outfit from Visions of the Future) I am going to have to dye my fabric. Any pointers on how to get a really beautiful green without also staining my washing machine?
This is the outfit I am talking about:
