Dwayne Johnson: THE SCORPION KING (1/3 SCALE) WIP: *help needed- last post*

Greetings! I am very happy to finally begin sculpting my first 1/3 scale character likeness. I have sculpted, to a lesser degree, since I was a child. But most of my projects have been small, and created from my imagination rather than a life-study. Typically I have used sculpey, up to now, but decided to go with monster clay on this one. It came to me in the mail, today, and I was impressed with the volume of a 5lb. block! And it was warm enough from the postal truck to be able to give it a few scratches... (I couldn't resist! :) ) As this is my first "big" sculpture, I am looking forward to getting some tips from you guys and gals.. OK, well enjoy the show:

OK, people, I went to Home Depot and bought all the things I would need to make a nice little armature stand. Then I put it together, assembled the wire character armature and attatched it to the stand and started adding aluminum foil to save some clay. Here is a shot of it:

That little guy standing next to the armature is Benny, my pet squirrel.

I'm sorry I didn't getmore done today, but I take care of my 2 year-old son, and he felt like being naughty today, so a lot of my time was wasted cleaning up one of his "art projects". :wacko More to come! Thanks for looking!!! :)

Re: Dwayne Johnson: THE SCORPION KING (1/3 SCALE)

Howdy, howdy! I finaly managed to get the monster clay on the armature. I am in love with monster clay... you can nuke it to the consistency of silly putty, apply it and shape it, then let it cool to a rigid plasticity. And once cooled, it is very tool friendly. Unfortunatly, I may have bitten off more than I intended, because I ran out of clay! :( So here is what I have so far, and this project is on siesta until I can get more clay on the first of the month. (If I don't get any critiques, I'll assume I am doing well, so far.)

Looking good. Glad you like the clay! If you haven't already, get a chef's blow torch and a can of circuit freeze - you'll find them very useful indeed. Also, for latter stages, white spirit works well to soften the top layer a little. It makes it a little mushy, and knocks the shine out of it. Just leave it 24hrs to properly evaporate :)

Thank-you for the advise, christrom. That is exactly the kind of thing I was hoping for when I posted this thread. And I will definitely use your advise... I want this guy to be "perfect". :) I will have more clay the first week of October, and then I'll put the mag wheels on and burn rubber. I want to have him molded and resin-casted in time for Christmas... I am really loving your Rancor sculpt, too! In the expanded universe, one of my all-time favorite novels is the Courtship of Princess Leia. It just blew my mind to imagine being on Dathomir, surrounded by Rancors... Damn that would be awesome! :) Take care, and thank-you.

I have that book! It is great!
I am looking forward to seeing how this turns out.
I bulk out my armature with tin foil to save clay.

I used foil, as well, but wasn't sure how much I might need to cut back into the torso, so I think I could have used more. But what you see on the armature is a full 5lb. block of monster clay. He is a big booger! :) Stay tuned, cause I'll have some more in about a week and a half and then it'll be on like Donkey-Kong! LOL Thank-you for looking.

Re: Dwayne Johnson: THE SCORPION KING (1/3 SCALE) WIP

I'm sorry for the delay, guys and gals... What I don't want for in talent, I lack in wealth, so I had to put him on hold for a while. I should have some new updates for you by this weekend, and I am hoping to have him finished by the end of January. I could use your help in the mean-time: I need reference photos for the leather pants he wears. I can't find any viable resources on the net, and I lack the ability to rip images from the DVD. I have enough references to finish him from the waist and up, so I will focus on that, but I want accuracy, so please help me if you can. Thanks, and I will get to work on him right-away and get some new pics up by this week-end.
