dremmel recommendations

I agree with Jason. I had a new Dremel and then paired it up with their vertical drill stand. The combination appeared to be made primarily of cheese. I found the Dremel too bulky and way too fast for styrene even at slow speed.

I punted both off onto eBay and bought a Proxxon Micromot 50/E and the relevant stand. They perform exactly as specified and I couldn't be happier.

that proxxon looks pretty sweet! but I cant find a dealer in my area
looking at the site, they have some pretty cool tools, I like the battery operated dremels ive had for many years, but am thinking the proxxon would do more for me.

i was actually in the market for one of the discontinued Dremel 1100 pistol style which are going for ridiculous amounts on ebay. i called some stores and one of them actually told me that Dremel was going to introduce a new version of the pistol grip style tools this summer so I'm going to hold off until then. I still have an old Dremel 800 with a flex-shaft and drill press so I'm ok for now.

Loved my Dremel, big honking 10 speed guy, used it on pretty much everything. Had the flex shaft on it which makes doing detail work much easier. Then the flex shaft broke and the poor thing went downhill from there. Lasted about 15 years though so I can't complain. I can't say I've heard of the Proxxon on ones, I'll have to look into them!

Here's a question for those of you with these Proxxon tools, do Dremel bits fit in the tool ok? I would think so, considering things like the keyless chucks, but I just want to make sure as I have dozens and dozens of different bits for my old Dremel. LOL it didn't help that I used to work at a place that sold them....

In my experience, they are not interchangeable. The Proxxon stuff is all in metric and the Dremmel stuff is SAE, I do believe. And, it turns out that 1/8 inch is NOT the same as 3 mm.

That said, the issue is with collet sizes, which need to be pretty much right on. If you're using a chuck you should be fine.
