-----------WIPs-------------------------
Hello all, this is a bit of a panic project, as I thought that the convention that this was needed for was at the end of the month, not in 6 days. So the schedule is very messed up and there'll be an overnighter (time to whip out the coffee! )

For those unfamiliar with the character, Hawke, here's a reference

hawke.jpg

Guyverion is getting the other items from someone else, and I believe he's making the armor bits, tabbard and such

Here's what he has so far (the belt is of course, going to be replaced by mine)

Here's a foam mockup I did to get the layout right. I found foam great for patterning because it behaves similarly to the damp leather I'll be using for the belt :)

I showed him some really cool looking rings, and he opted for them instead of the plain ones I had snagged earlier. He also gave me artistic liberties, so time willing, i might do a couple textured accents & such. We'll see though, since there's going to be a lot of sewing involved & I'll have to do it by hand, since I don't have a machine that can get through this.

Though i have some components cut & tooled, I'll post them in a batch when the rest of the parts are cut.

Wish me luck!

Re: Dragon Age 2-Hawke's belt WIP

alrighty.. more work done here..

some of the parts have been tooled, and some dyed, so I'm pretty much swapping out things as I go along.

More dyeing done, and preparing things to start sewing! Added texture because i thought it would look nice :)

And the buckle!

I rough cut the shape with a dremel

forgot to post a photo inbetween here, but I continued wok with the Dremel, and got the shape generally done. Since this was plywood, I coated it with some stuff called "tuf" that Wes from The Engineer Guy gave my fiance when he picked up stuff i purchased. sands smoother & sexier than bondo. Love it

sprayed a coat of rustoleum Stainless steel industrial on there, because it dries relatively fast, and sands nicely without clogging up sandpaper.

Here's the finished buckle, after a lil tweaking. I'm leaving it a bit rough, to retain the feel of Hawke's rough design

Gonna drop it in resin in a moment, and work on some other parts.

Re: Dragon Age 2-Hawke's belt WIP (2-13 update)

Somebody is a fan of asymmetry. :lol

Looking fantastic though. I'm really excited for this game.

Re: Dragon Age 2-Hawke's belt WIP (2-13 update)

Sweet costume choice, and you've certainly done the belt justice. Also eagerly awaiting this game!

Re: Dragon Age 2-Hawke's belt WIP (2-13 update)

Whoo, okay, this thing came down to the wire, so I had no time to post updates.... actually, i wound up forgetting to take a good chunk of wip photos, so I apologize ^^;

Re: Dragon Age 2-Hawke's belt (2-18 finished photos- lots of photos)

The belt is done, and heres a couple of wip photos that were taken before completion :)
things were so hectic that my fiance pulled a major assist, I layed out, cut, tooled dyed the leather, and punched the sewing holes, then gave the parts to him to assist in sewing. I unfortunately don't have a sewing machine, and hand sewing takes a good while. I wound up pulling 3 allnighters, and he pulled one getting this done in time XD

Here's some of the straps, in various stages of work.

Here's some up on the stitching pony that he was using. Chose to use a basic stitch that was not only faster, but was more accurate to the references than the saddle stitch that i usually usually use on everything

the pouch was again mocked up with craft foam, then transferred to leather.
pouch1.jpg

Decided to use 3 oz. leather on the side pieces, and 5 oz on the main body. I started the sewing to get the things aligned, and my fiance sewed the rest up and added the clasp :)

my fiance made the leg clasp while I was sewing the fur onto the back of the belt, (sewing fur onto belt= sloooowwww)

but yeah. sorry about the sporadic photos..

i was commmissioned to make the belt, and the guy was getting other parts from other folks. and he's making the armor I believe. He said he'd be sending photos form the convention hes attending over the weekend.

Wow, that was great. I am not usually into the costume stuff but my wife's a huge DA fan, so I had to take a peek at his and I'm glad I did. I'll show her this for sure, she'll love it. Quality work!

Hola thread, I'm the one that comissioned Fev to make the Belt! I'm currently just waiting to recieve the pics from the photoshoot (the con ended on sunday, so it normally takes a couple of days). I though I would upload a teaser image that a friend was able to snap. Will send the good stuff when I get them. Fev did awesome work and that belt is very soft loL!!

GREAT!!!

Could you share some informations about the techniques you used on this belt??
How did you do the texturing?
How did you cut the -obviously thick- leather?
How did you punch the sewing holes?
...

Thanks, Markus

the texturing was done with a stamping tool that I had purchased at tandy, and I then took it out to the street and stomped around on it (and used a mallet to make more controlled beatings)

An Xacto knife was used to cut the leather, a couple passes and it'll seperate.

And the holes were punched with a diamond shaped awl, with the holes punched at a slight angle (makes the stitches align better)

you can find the items here Tandy Leather Factory - Craftool 4-in1 Awl Set
