Update, Nov. 2011.
After several emails on this costume, I decided to revisit this thread and update some of the info within.

Posts #23 & #24 have new images and info on the costume. I still need to a real photoshoot...

Original post:

Been meaning to post some pics on my progress on this costume. I've been wanting to do this since the movie came out in 92'. Seemed appropriate that I should attempt this one since my first real replica(ish) costume was my Bela Drac that my mom made me when I was 12.

I've been collecting data and bits and pieces of info since right after Dragon Con last year, and was finally to the point where I could get started on the build this summer. Thanks to all who participated in the various threads I posted when I got stuck.

First up. Those iconic blue sunglasses...

It actually took me awhile to track down something usable. I was convinced at one point that I was going to have to get these custom made. After ordering some 6 pairs of pince-nez on ebay (all of which were too small) I randomly came across these.

They weren't exact, but it was a choice between getting them in the right size, or with all the right hardware. This is something I'll chock up to future upgrade if I can ever figure out how to get them made. These turned out pretty well IMO. 30 minutes with a sheets of blue acrylic and voila!

The suit is the biggest time consumer. So far I have the pants and Vest done. It took me forever to track down an appropriate fabric for this. The visual reference is fairly limited to fuzzy screenshots, so, even as a professional costume designer myself, it's difficult to tell what exactly all the fabrics are. It took a bit of conjecture on my part, and a dash of "find the best thing you can to approximate what you think it is." After nearly giving up, I came across some nice confederate wool flannel in a local fabric store. Cheap at $15.00 a yard. I love the way the pants turned out. They have a great shape. I drafted them from the Kawashima book, then trued the legs up with a civil war pants pattern I had just because I liked the way they fit through the leg. The vest I can live with. After getting it together I immediately noticed some things I wanted to change. If I have time, I plan on redoing this before D*Con, but it's on the back burner for now.

The coat is up next. I've got it mocked up in muslin, I just need to put the sleeves on and fit it. Then it's off to the fabric round. This WILL be the most labor intensive part of the project.

I already picked up one of the factory X canes. For now the shoes are the Stacey Adams lace-up boots until I can come up with a better idea. Have my wig, human hair, waiting to be styled. Tie pin waiting for a tie.

To Do:
Hat: Gonna have to bite the bullet and get a temporary wool hat for now. Just can't drop $800.00 on a beaver fur like the one in the film.
Ascot: Still looking for a decent fabric. It's surprisingly hard to find lightweight Grey silk with black dots. Or anything that I can dye even.
Gloves: I have a pair of German army gloves that I may be able to alter. Trying to not fully build any gloves as it's a pain to do so. Still looking for that off-the-shelf Grey leather glove option.
Shirt: Half cut out and sitting on my table at work. Just gotta put it together and dye it to the tone I want.

Questions? Comments? What do ya think so far?

Thanks for the words of encouragement all. I can't wait to see this thing together myself. I got my frock coat mocked up yesterday, then immediately groaned at the fact that I have no capable hands to help fit me, and it's hard to fit yourself. Ah well. I've done it before.

Oh yeah. Eiko's designs are absolutely breathtaking. If only my Con group could be talked in to doing more of the outfits.

Well, been busy and I'm absolutely terrible with picture taking, but thought some of you might like to see some progress pics, if for nothing else than to see the process. I made myself a duct tape dress form to fit my costumes on and it actually turned out to be a smart move. Made fitting this thing a ton easier. Although it was a bit creepy seeing this thing hanging from my ceiling.

I used the Laughing Moon pattern as a base, and mocked it up in muslin so I could see what I wanted/needed to do with it. Then I put it on the form and started pinching out what i didn't want. Reshaping to make it fit my body.

Next step was to draw in the lapel to look like I needed. Then I simply cut away, ripped the whole thing apart, and made a new pattern (remembering to add new seam allowances).

That's just the mock-up portion. I skipped the documentary of the final build. I just finished the whole thing earlier this week, and finished all the finishing touches on everything (buttons, buttonholes, etc.) yesterday. Knowing me, I won't have pics up til after Dragon Con, but they'll be up eventually. Sadly I may have to cheat on the gloves, as a pair of grey leather dress gloves continue to elude me, and I really didn't want to make them.

Great job so far. I will be watching your progess. Do you plan to have it done in time for this years D*Con?

Re: Dracula London Street Scene Costume Progress (92' Coppola) WIP

It's done. I have some cheaty parts, like a felt tophat instead of the Beaver, and my gloves may end up being cotton or black leather, but it'll be there.

Well, Back from Dragon Con. Great year. Started out a little weird. Strange vibe in the air, but it all worked out in the end. I was sitting on the plane when I realized i left my camera at home, so I have to rely on the courtesy of friends and strangers for pics. Here's a couple for now. Perhaps more later after people get settled in.

Enjoy!

You know its funny you say that about how it began. I felt the SAME exact way when I first got to DCon. It was as if people didn't know where to go anymore, either Marriott or the Hyatt. After a good party night, I think people figured it out !

Awesome outfit man, you really fit the part. You need to do a Sirius Black costume now.

The costume really turned out great. You did an amazing job! Great to meet you in person as well. :thumbsup

There was definitely a different vibe. Alot of new folks too. D*Con really blew up this year. 40,000 at prereg is what they said... Yet somehow it seemed more controlled outside of the elevators and escalators, in which people were demonstrating some ridiculous ettiquette.

One of my friends said something similar about doing another Oldman Character. I think I'd lean more toward something like Zorg from Fifth Element or Drexl from True Romance though.

I think the main goal is to do my upgrades to this one for now. I think I like it enough to repeat it.

Turned out great!:thumbsup

Re: Dracula London Street Scene Costume Progress (92' Coppola) WIP

Well, the updates are in full swing. New shirt ordered. New vest on the workbench (the old one had an interfacing issue due to rushing). But I wanted to drag up this thread from the depths of Hades to show off my newest acquisition. Behold my new hat! Custom made from an amazing artisan out of PA. His work is gorgeous, and he was pleasant to deal with. And fast.

My camera did some weirdness with picking up the moray in the ribbon. It doesn't really show up that well.
