Dr Who series 5 ep 10 for Amy

This one

Man, I'd love to have a go at actually painting some of these. It's been about 5 years since I've worked in oils, but this would be a fun way of getting back into it...maybe after my current list of projects gets a few things knocked off of it.

EDIT: Where is the picture of Amy you two are talking about?

If you paint The Pandorica Opens I'll either buy one or would very much appreciate a scan. Either way, keep us updated.

Will do. The one thing I could use help on is trying to figure out the size of the canvas. If anyone knows the size of Matt Smith's hands (Based on comparisons to the Sonic Screwdriver or other prop) that would probably be a good starting point. So, any guesses?

If I was to do this, I'd try to make the stretchers, and method of canvas attachment as accurate to Van Gogh's period as possible, but if I can get it done, I wouldn't be above prints or scans as well.

Why do I always do this to myself? Oh right, because it's fun!

I'd personally want to display it as it was in the future museum. Heavily weathered and unframed.

I was actually planning on weathering my canvas and aging the hardware, but I'm quite confused as to how the painting is supposed to be mounted in the Royal gallery. It appears to be on its stretchers, but isn't attached on the sides nor is the canvas wrapped around them at all. It almost seems like it was placed on top of the stretchers (probably stuck with velcro for the scene).

For mine, I at least want it stretched and tacked on stretchers...When I actually begin, then we can figure out the other possible directions I can take it (Since it has quite a few mountings/lack of mountings in it's few minutes on screen).

And what was this image of Amy that you guys were talking about? A portrait in the style of Van Gogh?

-Nick

Are you talking about the "For Amy" painting at the beginning of the thread?

I'll have to go back and check again, but I thought it was hanging in the gallery by a pair of strings that were poked through it at the top and tied off.

also did you see the Amy picture in that episode

This is what I'm referring too, I was just making sure I didn't miss a Van Gogh inspired portrait of Amy, because if one exists...well, I'd basically HAVE to replicate it.

And please check, I haven't watched the episode since Monday, so my memory is a tad fuzzy.

I may go talk to some local art nerds and see if they might want to help replenish my now non-existent collection of oil paints. Depending on how soon I can get restocked with my materials, this project may get a bump in priority (Sorry, Vortex Manipulator haha).

My bad, it was hanging in it's frame with no backing. Speaking of the VM, I'm about to post our own thread on it.

No worries. If/when I have scans/prints/paintings you can hang or mount it however you want. I just know you and I follow the same obsessive, detail-oriented path for these things, so I'm glad we checked.

I think I'll start with a sketch later in the week to start to get a sense of scale for the project. Looks like I'm breaking out my easel. But before I do, I'm trying to decide on a size for it. Here is a period list of "standard" stretcher sizes that Van Gogh would have used. I'm leaning towards the .55x.38m or the .60x.46m ones myself. What do you guys think?

EDIT: After making up some size mockups out of some scrap paper, I think 38cm X 55cm is the most likely "standard size" if that's what was used.

-Nick

PS: I guess I'll see you over at that thread for the VM soon, then. haha

PPS: I'll start a new thread for the painting of The Pandorica Opens soon.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed. My wife is a huge Dr Who fan and as I'm alway looking for ways to get props in the house I think I have a plan for the long hallway between the bedrooms, that wall would look great with some Dr Who inspired paintings.

I wish I was as talented as you guys:cry

Just saw this thread. I'd kill for a copy of The Pandorica Opens. Such a cool prop. Good luck on that one Nick. If you want some 720p screengrabs, let me know. In fact, I'm certain I found and downloaded the concept art for it too. I'll have to have a search for it.

Yes Please!!!! :D

I would love some 720p grabs. I'm in the process of roughly reconstructing the image (including the missing bits) so that I can sketch it. So, any access to higher-res images will help.

The one high-res image I'd actually be interested in the most is of the painting from the Royal Gallery when River shines her light at it. That might help me fill in some details.

PS: And now to also try to look for that concept art. :p

EDIT: I think I'm going to also try my hand at a Van Gogh-Inspired portrait of Amy once I "get my eye in" in regards to Van Gogh's hand and style.

Here you go Nick. It's the leaked concept art. I just checked it against the video of the episode and the swirls all match up in shape and size and whatnot. They're a little different but I'd be willing to bet that the bottom of the image that we don't see is similar to this one too. I wouldn't be surprised if a print of this was just painted over. The TARDIS has been re-done too. This definitely is just a basic concept art though but it definitely helps with getting the swirls and everything else in the right place. I'll have to get the screen grabs in a few hours as I have to go out right now. I'll post 'em up first thing when I get home. At least that way we could try to post screengrabs on top of this image and get an even more accurate image to work from.

Damn, I was hoping that was real, but the swirls on the bottom left seem a bit off from what they really were (They peak out under the Doctor's shoulder) and the bottom right seems too cluttered. I guess it really is a fan painting. It can never be that easy for us nerds, can it?

...That said, I'm working through a source to try to get the name of the original artist. My source doesn't have any concept images himself, but hopefully will be able to point me to the correct person who may. Fingers crossed!
