Donner Jor El Fabric Suggestions

Greets all,

I've been invited to a theme party this October and the suit I want to do is the 1978 Superman : The Movie Jor El. I'd like to do the white suit with coat that he wore while meeting with the council. The fabric almost looks like Brando was wearing stucco. It's a very odd texture.

Does anyone have any thoughts on how to achieve this or where I might find something workable? And, if anyone has a pattern, bonus!

Thanks,

Mark

Highly doubtful that this was what used, but I almost think if you were to cast a black light, or something else to give it that kind of glow, onto it that some white windbreaker material would give off that crinkled look.

Just an idea. Probably not a great one, but likely very cheap.

Unfortunately this kind of fabric was not made of plain fabric since they used 3M reflective grey silver glass bead screen to the archive this glowing effect. this was shown in the BTS section of Superman the movie. You'd have to look for an alternative source.

3M makes a Scotchlite reflective tape that can achieve a similar effect. I've seen it used on costumes before (ie - the light panels on a Tron suit, etc), but I haven't seen it used to make an entire costume. I see no reason why it wouldn't work though - although it may be a bit expensive to cover an entire tunic as the tape runs about $10-20/per roll. Keep in mind, however, that the only way to really see the effect as it appears in the film, is to take a photo of it with a flash. It won't be visible to the naked eye. As it existed on set, the costume is rather plain-looking. In fact, they had one of the original (or THE original) Jor-El costume on display at Comic-Con last year, and I managed to snap many photos of it as it's always been one of my favorite costumes of all time. Many people gathering around the booth were overheard saying 'that costume doesn't look cool' or 'what's so special about that?' - until I showed them a flash photo of it on my camera. Then they got the idea.

Kind regards,
Craig

I saw the episode of Profiles in history where they got this suit and they recreated the lighting effect on the show.

I'm not really trying to get the lighting effect because it just won't be possible in a party setting. I'm mainly more interested in the actual crinkled looking fabric. I like the idea of the reflective tape though. My other thought was to go with the black "judge robes". I could do the "S" in reflective tape. That also gives me the excuse to build the lighted staff (thus carrying my own light source for the "S").
