This project has literally been on the back burner for years. I bought a round trash can for my office with the idea that it would eventually become R2-D2.

10 years later I'm finally getting around to it.

Start of the legs:

Another evening's worth of work and I have rudimentary feet and more detail on the legs

I hope to get the ankles done and the rest of the detail added next.

Thanks for looking and stay tuned!

You've got a great start and i Love the nice cleans edges and sharp details so far. I dunno, the feet look about right to me. It's probably just a little camera distortion.

Thanks for the feedback! The feet are matching to the scaled blueprints I'm using, so I think they're okay. Without the battery box, ankle and other greeblies the feet might look a little undersized. I do need to add the final pad to the bottom of the feet, but I'm going to wait on that detail for a little while.

I did get some more work done last night -got the battery box added, added another layer to the legs to increase their thickness (still need to trim the sides so everything matches) and added more detail to the legs.

More work on R2-D2.

Cleaned up all the edges and layers, added additional detail on the ankles. Also created the pistons and gearing.

I keep thinking I’ll get this part done faster, but the level of detail takes lots of time.

Got the legs done and a couple of coats of white latex paint (the feet are far from done).

The gears and pistons are not attached yet, just laid in place so I can see how everything looks.

Got the feet (mostly) finished and painted. I’ve also done a few more rounds of sanding and think these parts are about as good as they’re going to get. I’ll be hitting the low areas with an airbrush and starting to paint in color.

I'm done with the feet (and sooooo ready to move on to the body).

Completed final paint and weathering:

The battery boxes have a mechanical linkage on the front. Carved the individual pieces from foam, assembled, painted and weathered.

This is awesome! Nice work.
Just wow!

Thanks to you both, very much appreciate the kind words.

Started working on R2’s skins. It’s three layers of poster board with details cut into each. Good progress for the weekend.

Unfortunately, I did have a mishap -the exacto knife skipped my straight edge and got my finger. Nothing like a quick trip to the emergency room.

Hurt like a mother, but I don't think there's any permanent damage. Just need time to heal...

Added structure to my trash can (the heart of R2) which also increased its diameter.

Test fit of the skins - need to do some tweaking but it’s coming along -I pinned the skins 90 degrees off from the structure so the vertical supports are in the wrong place for

I've been working on the inset pieces for the front skin, as well as starting rough-in painting on the skin itself.

Hoping to have the front skin finished up by the weekend.

Stay tuned.

This is just INCREDIBLE! The pics of the skin wrapped around the inner core are amazing. It's hard to believe that its all just cardboard and foam.
