Does anyone own any of these knockoff Strider swords? (see lpost #13)

Well, just got a big assortment of UC LOTR swords off ebay - all showed up in good condition, minus the Strider Ranger sword. As seen time and time again, the end of the crossgaurd was snapped off (see pic). Amazingly, I found the gold "washer", but the actual end piece was no where to be found. The place told me to either file a claim with UPS, or they would offer me a $10 refund (woohoo!). I dont want to file a claim, because it was packaged in a huge box with 8 other swords, and I dont think it would result in much anyhow.. My question is - is there a known knockoff of this sword that has a good matching part? I cant tell from ebay pictures... or just any other way the could be remedied - please help! (obviously pic is not of THE sword - just for reference)

Re: Help! Missing piece on Strider sword - how to replace?

The knockoffs are identical, the only difference is in materials. Blow the $30 and repair your sword.

Could you direct me to a specific one? I know the REALLY cheap ones are one solid piece with painted gold - I just want to make sure I get one that works...

Re: Help! Missing piece on Strider sword - how to replace?

I actually don't think that's ever a separate piece on the knockoffs... Like you said, one solid piece... I'm surprised to hear the UC ones can break so easily! Tim's eBay sword had a gold washer replaced too...

Re: Help! Missing piece on Strider sword - how to replace?

I dont think it'll do much good since they've gone bankrupt and nothing LOTR has been on production for some time now...

I dont want to post this auction link, but there is an ebay sword that says its the same size and looks the same - does anyone possibly have this sword??? It has a BIN of 79.99 w/ 24.00 shipping...

OK - I've spent the last couple hours grinding and sanding a piece of stainless steel into the perfect shape - my only problem now is it has a "sanded" look to it... its not smooth enough. And the metal is too shiny, it doesnt match the antiqued look of the original part - does anyone know how I could remedy these two things???

Re: Help! Missing piece on Strider sword - how to replace?

Try this: line the broken part back up with the hand guard and drill a small hole through the piece going into the hand guard. Then, countersink the end of the broken piece and screw the piece back toghether with a small pan head screw. Finally, plug the end with epoxy putty, sand, and paint touch-up. The repair should be virtually unnoticeable.

Just a thought.

He said he doesn't have the broken part...hence it being missing.

Sounds like you've done well shaping your own though, not sure what to suggest about the actual finish of your part though.

You know, it might be worth contacting UC...they were very good with replacing missing parts previously, but with all the stuff happening now...I'm not so sure, it may be worth a try though.

Re: Help! Missing piece on Strider sword - how to replace?

I dont think the knockoffs have EXACTLY identical pieces since they are mostly rat-tail tanged through the entire hilt and I've heard the UC Strider was a mostly full tang with a threaded bit at the tip. As such, I don't think the two crossguards would be interchangeable because of the way they were made to fit their individual handles. The knockoffs of virtually ANY movie sword are also either too small (especially Anduril in the 36"-48" range, with the occasional 54"+ replica popping up. Even the 53" UC is smaller than the 60" original prop.) or too large when compared to the official reproductions, making scale a BIG issue, and their parts are usually poorly cast and would look REALLY bland compared with the rest of the sword if they were to be used as replacement parts.

Just a thought.

Re: Help! Missing piece on Strider sword - how to replace?

Thanks for all the suggestions guys...

I'm not sure there even IS a United Cutlery to contact anymore...

And the piece I made is close, but not close enought to not stand out.

Bleh, I hate this - one tiny piece thats impossible to replace, and this sword is worthless.

As far as the size issue of knockoffs, the one I am looking at ebay has its measurements as the UC one - and I have heard that this is the only LOTR sword that some knockoffs have been able to match visually... but I cant spend $100 just to get this tiny part *sigh*
