Doctor Who: How many different versions of the Sonic Screwdriver have there been?

Re: Doctor Who: How many different versions of the Sonic Screwdriver have their been

I quite like the fact that we dont really know where the prop came from,
gives the prop and even the show a mystical feel about it.

Still, ive put my name down for the sonic run thats happening later this yeah, complete my Baker costume!

Going back to my original question,
does anybody know of anything aout the Masters TCE?

Re: Doctor Who: How many different versions of the Sonic Screwdriver have their been

Which one? There were several of those as well. The modified water pistol, the brass pipe with the four petaled bulb and high output light, the lit rod attached to the camping battery or the PVC t-section and pipe sticking out of the middle?

Re: Doctor Who: How many different versions of the Sonic Screwdriver have their been

Sorry lol, I ment Ainleys Four Petald bulb, (the dodgy looking one)
Just wonderd if anybody had attepted to recreate that prop?
I was also wondering how one would make that one?
As I have only seen pictures on one website, and it doesnt show the mecanism at the bottom.
I allways thought It was the whole elastic band situation pulled back with a button for the light, on the shaft?

Sorry, im a curious little monkey.

Re: Doctor Who: How many different versions of the Sonic Screwdriver have their been

I've got a few pictures but nothing earth shattering. It's essentially a brass tube and four brass pedals spray painted black on the oustide with a push rod in the back with a small brass cap on it. It looks like someone raided the junk drawer at a bedding furnature store and slapped it out from head board parts.

When I spoke to someone that had handled it he said it was aggrivatingly heavy so it may just have been old brass bad parts.

Re: Doctor Who: How many different versions of the Sonic Screwdriver have their been

Haha, well it sounds heavy when it hits the floor in Five Doctors (if that was the orginal, probally a stunt i guess)

I see, so its a push rather than a elastic band esque pull system,
It has allways been a prop i would love to make!

Re: Doctor Who: How many different versions of the Sonic Screwdriver have their been

Yup, push rod in the back. I've also heard that the scenes where it lights up they ran a cable to it from an external power source and the light inside heated up the whole thing very, very fast.

Thankfully LED's have come a long way so your build should be able to get away with a 9 volt.

Re: Doctor Who: How many different versions of the Sonic Screwdriver have their been

Woho yes!!!
Was talking to a mate about it last night,
really, for what it is, its so simple,
but i'm adamant that i want to use brass for the entire thing,
and try and get the slow decending shaft towards the push knob.
i was thinking to have a push button in the knob so its one action for the petals to open and the light to come on!

Re: Doctor Who: How many different versions of the Sonic Screwdriver have their been

Guess we can add another version of the Sonic Screwdriver when the 11th Doctor appears.

As for the TCE... I looked it up. Delgado's version only appeared in his first story (Terror Of The Autons) and it wasn't given a name yet. It was just a basic rod type thing at this point. Delgado's Master used a laser gun a lot if I remember right.
I can't remember if it actually appears in Deadly Assassin, but we know he used it due to the shrunken bodies (dolls).

The TCE appears a lot during Ainley's run as the Master from Logopolis to The Ulitmate Foe. Probably the best known version of the TCE is during Ainley's run.

Now I want the different versions of the TCE. :lol

I like the TCE, but I do like that they came up with something else for the new series. I think if the Master appears again that they should bring back the TCE. It's just the Laser Screwdriver really worked for those stories... Mainly because he kept mocking the Doctor.

Re: Doctor Who: How many different versions of the Sonic Screwdriver have their been

Just to play Devils Advocate, are we sure it's the sonic and not a random story centric gadget to be used in the one story arc and never seen again sort of like his severed hand in the tank?

Re: Doctor Who: How many different versions of the Sonic Screwdriver have their been

I just watched the Silence in the Library two-parter last night and River Song pretty clearly stated that he didn't give her the sonic until the last time he saw her, which I really hope we get to see at some point. It would be pointless for him to have a new sonic yet at this point.

We cover all the styles (short of Matt Smith's) of the Doctor Sonic Screwdriver in out KTEH segment:

It's the second segment that starts at the 5:30 mark.

manofsteel25 - I feel kinda like a jerk for not lending you any of the sonics in my collection for that filming but everyone here knows how it is with that fear of something going wrong with the mail and what not. I'm really glad it all came out so well though.

No Worries. JE Smith from Gallifrey base leant me the McGann Sonic and Karvsta from this board lent me his Pertwee, I luckily owned the rest. In the end everything works out works out for the best.

The Master didn't continually maintain ownership of a screwdriver out of a habit of mocking the Dr, it was from having had so many incarnations owning one- as the DR! In the original series, that little bit of information was dropped to the audience, and I've been trying to remember which episode it was for years now, that the Master is a future incarnation of the Dr, which has apparently gone evil (gee, ya think? maybe?) It's always been my opinion that he has had a laser screwdriver not as a gibe, but as just a natural progression of improvements made to the sonic screwdriver. This episode I'm referring to was, I believe, during the Tom Baker era.

My area does not screen the original series anymore, and my work schedule killed any chance I had of following the new series shortly after it started, and in an ironic twist, that same job doesn't allow me to afford the DVDs, either!

Anyways, it's my opinion, and I'm entitled to it, warped as it may be :)
