Do you need a Harry Potter wand for under 5 bucks?

So for those who missed my budget Nimbus 2000 build (http://www.therpf.com/f9/i-got-my-girlfriend-broom-valentines-day-176699/) I'll go ahead and tell you, I'm not really a Harry Potter fan, but my girlfriend is. So via osmosis I know a bit about the series. Any I was in Hobby Lobby, and I saw a "rosewood yarn winder"

I pointed it out to Tiffany(my GF) and said it was a Harry Potter wand, she said it did look kinda like one. So I picked it up and with one of those 40% off coupons they are always having with their website(I love my smart phone) I picked it up for just under 5 dollars. Anyway as it turns out the winder is 11 inches, and Harry's wand in the books is suppose to be 11 inches. Also here is what his wand looks like in the first 2 movies.

I was floored! Very similar, i mean yeah the yarn winder is thicker, and has those 2 nubs at the end of the handle, but wow, it is defiantly close enough for government work :p. You could take off the "nubs" but then it would be about 1/2 inch to short.

I read that the wand I show in the pic was in the wand shop scene, but maybe not the one Harry gets, but the one Harry does use is identical to it in looks, and that one is 11 inches long, just like the winder. I read that Harry's wand was 14 inches in the movies, but that may have just been the last 6.

Thoughts? Ideas? Comments? Questions?

That's really cool!
I'm a newbie but it looks like you could sand down the wand part, and flatten the top-most rounded nubs to get rid of their rounded edges, thereby making it narrower and more like Harry's. Sand down the flared part of the wand handle near the top and make it all the same width, stain it darker, weather it a little, and it'd be really, really close imo!
I guess people could choose between keeping the bottom ridges or cutting it - the flared base would look very similar if it was cut.

Perhaps if a gift for a child, cutting it wouldn't matter as much, since they have smaller hands.

For $5 that's definitely a good find! It wouldn't cost much to tweak it a bit either ^^

It is very similar! However I would like to point out that the Harry wand props used in the movies were closer to 14 inches. Or at least in 3-8. They were different designs in 1-2 but judging by how big the wand looks in Daniel Radcliffe's little kid hands, I would assume those props were around the same length. I know you aren't going for perfection, but I'm a guy who points out useless trivia like that any chance I get.

Well depending on how big the "handle" part is, maybe you could chop it down, cut off the extra rings, drill a hole and insert a dowel of the correct length. Stain it. :love

Been having a rough time of it recently and needed a quick prop project to pick me up.

Found the item on their online store, but says it's out of stock.
11" Rosewood Yarn Winder | Shop Hobby Lobby

I think I'll call the two stores nearby me and see if they have any in stock. If not, I'll keep other yarn winders in mind -- I'm not looking for one accurate to Harry's, just a HP/Hogwarts style one for my girlfriend. Thanks for the information Harry Bardwell.
