Diversion Prop - BTTF III Doc and Marty 1885 Photo with Frame

Amidst all the 9-5 work craziness and everything CAR related I will occasionally take a break and work on something odd ball.

My current side burner project is actually something I've had for a good while. I purchased three photos made for BTTF III from a friend of mine. There photos were as follows.

Doc alone by the Clock (used in the library reference photos)
Doc and Marty by the Clock (same formatting as the photo above)
and lastly
Doc and Marty by the Clock (this is the one used in the frame at the end of the film)

I've put the originals away, but wanted to do something for the Doc and Marty pic from the end of the film. So it was time to stretch my creative juices.

and for comparison - a shot of the original.

This whole shebang was scratchbuilt - no off the shelf parts. Believe it or not the original frame master I did is made from layered styrene and pvc sheet. It's what I had on hand, it can be cut by hand in my office, and lastly my woodworking stuff is piled behind a Delorean at the moment. Once I had the frame mocked up I treated it with Gesso to simulate the wood grain.

From there I had to sculpt all the detail plates. Using an HD screencap of the original I scaled everything to my original photo and went from there.

The originals sculptures were made from Supersculpy and then molded/cast. Duplicate castings were made and placed on the frame - then the whole ball of wax was molded/cast. Here is a detail shot of the corner. You can see the mock wood grain real well.

The mat board was hand cut and lined with a ruling pen. The text was also transferred from the HD Screencap to the mat board via a graphite tracing - then inked by hand.

All in all, a pretty damn fun prop to kill a couple days on. I think the most complex part was sculpting the filligree details. Its been AGES since I did a freeform sculpt like that.

It was a very welcome break from time circuits and other car related props.

A W E S O M E.

Before I finished reading your post, my immediate question was going to be: "Where in the world did you manage to come across the EXACT picture frame?"

Bravo. I'm a sucker for odd-ball/overlooked props like this.

Very Cool Gary. I had no idea you were holding out on us!!!!!Great Prop...so I gues my set of photo's are in the mail to me? :)

That looks amazing. I've always wanted one, and this is the first replica I've ever seen! Great work! THanks so much!!!

I just got done watching BTTFIII. When Marty opens the gift from Doc and reveals the picture in frame I thought to myself. That would be an awesome prop to have. So cool to see that you actually did it. I would love to buy a reproduction of it. Does anyone know if any were made in quantity!?

My biggest problem with making more of these has been a lack of time. I've also wanted to revisit the project and make a few "changes". Again, the problem is just time.

If I could get that stupid DeLorean in my garage to "work" I wouldn't have these problems :)

I do promise that there will be more of these in the future and I'll be sure to post when that happens.

I'm glad this thread has been brought back to the forefront. I would be one the first in line for this. Such a cool prop!

:thumbsup

I'm sure we can all relate to lack of time on certain things. I've got 3 projects all in a holding pattern right now for the very same reason....a GB1 proton pack, a Vampyre Killing Kit and an ecto containment unit. REALLY frothing at the bit to get going on all of these, but other things of much higher priority keep pushing them to the backburner. Sigh...

Anyway, I look forward to time being on your side to offer some of these up at some point. :)
