If you are in the bay area, the Disney museum opened today. I will be going within a few weeks for sure. There aren't any pictures up on flickr yet but the local paper, sfgate.com has a few photos. Here will be the highlight for me, a scale miniature of Disneyland!

I can't wait to see it!

Re: Disney Musuem

The model was made by Kerner Optical, formerly known as the ILM Modelshop.

Re: Disney Musuem

I read some where that no pictures are allowed! So sneak some out :) And here I was thinking Imagineers built it, maybe Rolly Crump! But ILM, I love it, I wonder what year it was approximately made and who had their hands on it?

I want one! I wonder how come Disney won't do HO scale models of everything in the parks! I'll take Z scale too :)

Here are some videos of faller amusement park rides, really well done.

I may have to make the trip just for that model. So far as I know, there's never been another like it (the Epcot prototype notwithstanding).

Re: Disney Musuem

It looks like Disneyland 1955.

Brad
Hardly, in 55 Disneyland was a very sparse place.
They had the 55 model on display during the 50th anniversary of DL.

I find it an odd decision to put the museum in San Fransisco. I identify Walt with the LA area(Hollywood). I think the location has more to do with where the family lives, but sadly that will have a negative impact on attendance.

I think this guy is a bit out of line.
Somewhere along the line, Walt Disney the man has become synonymous with the corporation.
This guy doesn't get it, Walt Disney was the Walt Disney company. He guided it, molded it, and his employees were not seeking the praise of the company. They were seeking Walt's praise. That man alone drove that company, he did things that Disney the Corp will never do. There isn't an industry leader today(or since his death) that can match him.

Re: Disney Musuem

there is a company that is making miniature models of disney..i think they are called olzinsky or something like that. I met the artist at D23. He said, he is ccurently building a small scale of disneyland...

John Lasseter had his scale model displayed at D23 in the olzinsky booth...

Thanks for your interest in The Walt Disney Family Museum!

Re: Disney Musuem

Hi there,
Wow this is awesome. This model shown has to be between 59 and 60. The reason I know this is the case is actually kind of simple, I'm a Disney monorail nut!, so that being said, my knowledge of the first 2 monorails is extensive. The Disneyland Alweg Monorail MK1( three car train) was built in 59, same time as the Matterhorn. The MK2( 4 car train) was introcuced in 61 and ran to the new Disneyland Hotel. The beamway depicted in this model is the condensed beamway prior to the extention to the hotel and front of the park, though apparently missing the old roundhouse. As I'm going to make a z scale working model of this very same layout, anything inside the perimeter of the beamway, this is a great model to see. My thought is to concentrate on the monorail itself and use the Olszewski miniatures for the rest, they are even doing a Matterhorn. All of their minitures hae lighting and are in Z scale. I sure would love to see a hi resolution image of this model...

Re: Disney Musuem

I saw this a few weeks ago and I couldn't help but think maybe the same characters who worked on the Disney scale model before we learned of ILMs involvement..... military modelers of a different kind

Re: Disney Musuem

The models represents "Walt's Disneyland", a fictional assembly of various attractions throughout the years as Walt either imagined it or would have.

And to be clear: ILM did not make this model; it was Kerner Optical, the company formed when ILM sold off it's physical production facilities. True, most of the modelmakers are former ILMers, but giving credit to ILM is a disservice to Kerner.

Re: Disney Musuem

Had to raise this thread from the dead. (Or, perhaps a better way to put it: unthaw the thread from its cryo-sleep) My daughter and I visited the Walt Disney Family Museum a couple weeks ago. It's AMAZING. Elegant, smart and ambitious. If you're a fan of Disney this museum is a must see. In addition to several rooms designed to showcase the highlights of his work and the arc of his life, you come to one room with a floor to ceiling window overlooking a picture postcard view of the Golden Gate Bridge. On the day I visited, there wasn't a cloud in the sky and the bridge looked fantastic.

And then there's the Disneyland diorama mentioned in the posts above. OMG, this thing is spectacular! There are rides that actually move... and the attention to detail is extraordinary. So... if you're gonna be in the Bay area... or if you're lucky enough to live there... GO GO GO. Here's a link:

Wow! 20 bucks for adult admission. Leave it to a Disney organization to be more expensive than any other museum in town! Still, I'm sure they'll get my money the next time I'm in San Francisco.

Yeah! $20 at the door. But two hours later, as we walked out, both of us thought it was totally worth it. (The prices they charge for some of the memorabilia at the museum's store, not so much!)

I went in November '09 and if you are a fan of Disney it will be well worth the trip. Aside from all the cool items already mentioned, they also have what is believed to be the first sketch of Mickey Mouse.

The model of Disneyland is great. the builders did a wonderful job.

The museum is pretty close to the ILM offices, so you can go by and see Yoda in the fountain too!

My wife and I went a while back. We were a bit concerned that it seemed to be about Walt himself more so than a Disney museum from what we had heard, and of course the ticket prices seemed a bit high.

Those concerns disappeared when we walked through it. Loved it. I wouldn't necessarily consider it a Not To Be Missed attraction if you happen to ever travel to San Francisco, but it sure was worth it for us.
