Dinosaur Fans! Check THIS Out!

Jayn: Awesome!!

Fernbank is a favorite weekend get-a-way for me and my wife. Both of us can spend hours looking at the dinos.

We actually drove down to watch when we saw on CNN that they were hanging the pterosaurs.

It's about a 5 hour drive, so we usually drive down Friday night, spend all day at the Fernbank on Saturday and drive back home Sunday morning. We do that a couple of times a year.

(Yeah, how old and boring are we when we enjoy driving to look at dinosaur bones?)

Very cool. Do you remember what kind of color(s) you used?

( me?) Basic browns (burnt & raw umber) and black for a 'staining' wash if I remember right.. can't remember if I used another for a highlight..
I'll have to dig up more pics..(pre-digital to scan)

Well here's one heavy on the raw umber:

And here's one heavy on the burnt umber:

Neither one of these are looking right to me. I'm thinking of going to oils instead of acrylics and maybe adding some siennas. Any thoughts on how I can get a better looking color, anyone?

Well, I FINALLY got the first of mine done. Here's some finished pics.

This was just a "quick" dirty build to get the hang of a model genre I've never delved into before. I'll be tossing this up on eBay to help pay for my car inspection. The other two copies of this kit I'm keeping for myself. The first will be a bone build, and I may possibly try altering the pose into something more dynamic. The other one I'm going to use as a skeleton to sculpt a live T-Rex, though that's a project much much further down the road.

EDIT: Here's the link to the auction if anyone is interested - http://cgi.ebay.com/T-Rex-Tyrannosaurus-Rex-Dinosaur-Skeleton-Display-Model_W0QQitemZ180250841512QQihZ008QQcategoryZ3230QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Looks awesome! I'm glad I didn't plunk down a lot of money for a Kaiyodo one a few years back. Although it was in a running pose....

I understand why this thread was moved out of props... but why wasn't it moved to general modeling?

great build btw:thumbsup

The kit is now out of production, but most TRUs still have them in stock, though said stock is dwindling. My local one only has two or three left. Get 'em while you can, because they go anywhere from $40 - $90 online, but only $15 - $30 in the stores.

Thanks for all the comments guys.

The whole kit got a base coat of dark dark dark grey (almost black), then I dabbed and drybrushed varying shades of tubed acrylic burnt and raw umber. Sometimes I had some reds and yellows mixed into coats. There are about 12 different color layers (all vaguely translucent) on it and then a coat of clear Testors Semi-Gloss.

The base was primed then given the same grey/black. Then several layers of high gloss black were put on, then a thin coating of the flat grey/black again. Once completely dry, i hit it with fine steel wool and then a lint free cloth, which gives it that volcanic glass look.

The teeth and claws were oil paints, mostly yellow and black with some burnt sienna thrown in for flavor and help blend it in with the umber bones.

Aw man, this is awesome!

Toys R Us's online store even lists it for $20!!

If I had room for this, I'd so buy it.

Now if it was a Velociraptor... :)

I'm hoping to get one of these guys this coming TUesday, I was at TRU last night and they had them for $19.95 so I'll go back and get one.

Anyone know where to get a companion Triceratops skeleton like this one quality and price wise as the T-rex without breaking the bank???

$300 is too much to spend right now.

I've got my fingers crossed that TRU/ EduScience might do one for this toy season, but for right now, I think the $300.00 one in your pic is the only one anywhere near in scale. :(

Sarge. I thought I read here someplace these were discontinued? why would TRU bring out more in the line?
Wish full thinking... But..?...

Well, what I'm hoping is that maybe the Rexes were made for last Christmas season, and that they'll do a different one this year.

If I had the time and money to run up the phone bill, I'd really like to get ahold of someone in TRU corporate, and see what's really going on with these. Edu Science is just TRU's educational division, and I haven't been able to find a way to contact them online.

It seems to me though, that Edu Science could (or should) distribute these through outlets other than just the TRU stores and website- I'm sure places like Edmond Scientific and other educational toy compainies would love to sell things like this. Museum gift shops all over the country would eat these up too.

Would anyone reading have time to look into this for us?
