Diamond Select's Viper: Opinions?

I have been looking at the (was) Gentle Giant (corrected to) Diamond Select Mark II Viper - I realize it's not top notch like I have seen here, but is it worth getting?

Thanks.

I just looked at the GG website and didn't see it listed.

Just got mine with the standard Raider and they're both quite nice. The only thing with the Viper is that the canopy is a separate piece of clear resin which just sits free on top of the main body. There are two notches it fits into the body which don't >quite< match up. Aside from that one minor thing, I love it. Sturdy construction and excellent paint job.

Got my Viper last night. It's a decent statue. it's not super accurate by any means but it's good for desk art.

I had to take a sanding/brillo pad to the airbrush weathering. It was just a bunch of black blobs on my statue. Looked like frakking hell. After moderate sanding the Viper has a really cool streaky look like the real one does. :) The white paint is really durable and actually took a little shine after I sanded it.

My impression went from "Oh hell no" before sanding, to "damn, this thing looks cool" after the sanding.

The cockpit detail is really nice. I have to find an F18 kit for the joystick and a F16 kit for the throttle control. There are little holes where they should be. Maybe they were thinking of adding them?

One of the things that bugs me is the canopy. You can't see it in the photos but the side glass is super cut-in compared to how it should be. It's almost vertical instead of at an angle from the edge. Looks like an "L" if you view it from the front. Hard to explain... I'll get some photos up later. I'll scratch up a better canopy later. (Oh, btw the clear resin sucks, it is brittle as hell. Snapped off one of the tabs on the canopy trying to get it on the first time. frak!)

Packaging is fantastic. They put a lot of care into packing it safe. They even went as far as embossing "Battlestar Galactica" text on the top of the Styrofoam carrier.

Over all I'd give it :thumbsup :thumbsup :thumbsup 1/2 out of five. For the $100 bucks I paid for this it will look great sitting on a shelf.

Thanks all for the replies. I should be getting mine in the next week.

Motivealloy, could I hit you up for some pics of your weathering? I'd love to compare your after to my before to see what works best.

Much thanks!

Here is a before shot of the worst bit of the weathering. Reminds me of camouflage. Doh!

I'll post photos of the weathering fix later this evening.

I received mine the other day - overall I am pleased with it. :)

I'm looking forward to your after pics.

Here is after I went over all of the weathering with the sanding pad.

This is what I used to sand down the waethering.

The engines look sooo much better.

All of the stupid blobs are gone and the streaking looks wicked.

It's hard to tell but I used an Xacto to scratch off the simulated silver paint chipping. I don't recall the viper ever having that detail on it.

Here is a better close up of the cockpit.

And here is the canopy with the weird step in the side glass. You really don't notice it on the statue.

Here's the base.
