Detention Block Camera build

Starting up a thread to document my (now complete!) detention block camera build. It's been a really long build, but I've learned a ton along the way.

This one started back in 2018 when I discovered that these were built from Paterson Trident slide viewer. I picked one up for a great price on Etsy and decided to mold and cast it.

My first mold completely failed because the silicone stuck to the glass lens (I had no idea silicone stuck to glass!), so the one pictured here is my second mold. I used rebound 25 and a fiberglass mother mold which worked quite well.

I ended up casting these as a single piece, but cast the lens portion in onyx so that it could just be polished up.

Picking the right color was a chore. I went through several options before landing on Humbrol 48 gloss enamel.

...to be continued!

Greeblies were next. I had the masters for the lens and base printed by shapeways and molded in silicone. The final lenses were cast in tinted acrylic, bases in resin and painted with Molotow.

The aluminum antennas were provided by rebelscum's recent run and look fantastic.

Do you please have any links to parts please. Especially the antennas and specific tv stand

Regards

Martin

Here's the TV stand I used: Full-Motion Tilt Swivel Corner TV LCD LED Wall Mount 17 19 20 21 22 23 24 26 27" | eBay

The antennas came from this run - I'm not sure whether there are any leftovers, though: Limited Run - Detention Block Camera Parts

The STL files for the light lenses and bases are available on my Etsy store if you're interested in printing them yourself: Detention Block Camera Light 3D Print Files | Etsy

Has anyone ever come up with 3D print files for the slide projectors themselves? It looks like there are good resources for the greeblies, but to be honest I am trying to build something for a display. There is already competition enough for original parts and the prices reflect that.

Nice, I know there were some cast, including black resin lenses. I hadn’t seen a 3d printed one yet, that does look very accurate. I wonder how he is doing the lenses.

it’s the trident that tends to go for silly money, but if you are patient and you can find them cheaper, I actually ended up buying 7, as one had minor damage I hadn’t spotted in the pictures, my own fault.

Cheapest I found was £9, most expensive was £30 but that that was the last one I needed and I was sick of hunting for them at that point.

There are different versions that are very similar and even different brands that are close and are much cheaper, so if you’re not bothered by accuracy and fancied making a variant you could go in that direction.

Paterson also made viscount, magnaview & royal models normally seen £5-10 each.

Boots also made a similar looking viewfinder that is a bit more square that comes up regularly for about £3 each.

Richard Cleveland just posted a 3D print he’s working on the Star Wars Room Builders Facebook group.

These are not the latest files. I have made more accurate ones but I still need to make the lens. You can find the latest files on the Star Wars Room Builders group.
