Dengar's Rifle in Empire - What do we Know?

Looking at the below image of Dengar from Empire, I am wondering what real-life weapon this prop is based on - anybody know?

That's a German MG-34 completely unmodified (commonly used by Sandtroopers as well).
Although, in the movie Dengar has an MG-42 with it's buttstock removed.
4-LOM ends up with the MG-34 rifle shown in that publicity photo.

Awesome - seems there's no question about it. So the barrel has been removed? I thought no mods had been done. Anybody have a pic of an intact MG-34?

The barrel would be in the middle of the front tube witht he holes. A picture with an intact barrelw ould basically show the same thing, except when you look into the holes of the barrel jacket you'd see the barrel.

Not completely unmodified.

Isn't that the same AM earth plug as seen on the stock on Fett's ESB rifle... and it looks like there is some type of round greeblie in front of that, that isn't part of the typical MG-34.

beat me to it, Art. :lol BTW, whenever you wanna turn loose of that gun, look me up. ;)

You know what is sad? Right now, it is sitting in the back of a closet. :( The last thing I did to it was trade out the old ribbing for some of Gino's T-Track, but it is so heavy that I can't easily mount it to a wall so it is sitting in the closet along with the MG-15 (that is another story all together)...

Actually, the more you look at the gun in Dengar's hand looks to me to be one of the EXACT guns that the sandtroopers carried.

I don't know if this story is entirely true or not, but I have always been told that guns with full receivers couldn't be brought to Tunisia so they had to chop up the guns.

This is why all the E-11s carried by sandtroopers had the solid back halves, why the MG-15s had a cast receiver, and why the MG-34's also had fake receivers.

In other scenes, you see stormtroopers carrying full E-11s and full MG-34s, but in the scenes from Tunisia they are always the modified receiver variants.

Below is a photo of one of those MG-34s which looks a LOT like the one in Dengar's hands (obviously the fins have been removed, but they were only wired in place to begin with).

Great pics, guys.

Art - for those of us who don't know guns very well, can you educate us on what the receiver is?

The big part above the trigger. I wonder if the gun Solo threw to Chewie was a fake as well based the way he threw it. The real deals are HEAVY.

And btw, these are two great pics I have never seen before. Any more goodness out there?

I think this is the first ESB pic detailed enough to make out such details. The greeblie to the left appears to be the Snowtrooper belt buckle detail.

For more new pics check out the "Exclusive Archive Photos" on the starwars.com ESB 30th anniversary site:

Yep, that's where I got this image.

There are some STUNNING photos in that archive. This one is just mind-blowingly awesome:
