I think you keep it simple. You should build a yoke for the top half of your torso out of a t-shirt or a sweatshirt which is the foundation for the white lines and a star -- basically something you pull over the jumpsuit. Sewing white lines and a star onto something you have trimmed and hemmed to shape seems like the easiest route to success.
After that, you need boots, gloves, a belt and a helmet.
