Deep Space Nine, where to start?

hello all,

I miss my weekly dose of trek deeply. The only series i haven't watched to completion was DS9. I don't know why i couldn't get into it beyond the first season or two. Part of it was perhaps the cardassian / bajorian aesthetic (prop wise) or the fact that kira reminded me too much of a moody ex...Probably it was the fact i found it difficult to emotionally invest in a multi-episode story arc...i returned to watch the series now and then, but couldn't understand what was going on with the whole dominion thing.

Anyway, there must be some great episodes of DS9... Are there any suggestions for 'must-see' trek? The last thing i remember, was someone was found hanging dead in the promenade. I do remember worf arriving but i may have just tuned in after hearing that worf was coming aboard...i also remember a young jake meeting an older version... tell me this wasn't as good as it got?

any suggestions on some episodes to win me over?

[edit] i did see the tribble episode, loved the remark about 'boy they sure new how to pack them in those days'

I'm in the same boat; really the only Trek I have never watched except a few episodes here and there. The only thing I guess that has stopped me was some of the same stuff. I didn't care about the Bajorians or their religion, Kira rubbed me the wrong way as well. Just last week I started watching from the beginning (only watched the first 3 episodes). I figured I would give it a chance. I never watched "Voyager" or much of "Enterprise" when they aired but since have found them quite entertaining. I see people post that DS9 is their favorite Trek series so I'm sucking it up and giving it a chance. So far unimpressed, lol.

DS9 was my fav trek series, it has great story arcs and plots most of which aren't formula or black & white, like most tv series.
The characters also have a lot of depth to them.

Seasons 1-3 were " kinda' " ok... :unsure

A few good Episodes here and there, but when
Worf came on board Season 4 it definitely picked up speed.. :thumbsup

I thought it was a great Series but DS-9 is not for everyone.

You really have to start at the beginning, Next Gen started slow for most people to.

As I post Sy-fy has "Conspiracy" on from Next Gen. :lol

Top of my head, Season four's, "The Visitor", and Season Six's, "In the Pale Moonlight" are two of my favorite Episodes.

I would be interested in what you think of "In The Pale Moonlight"

I am watching the entire series right now and I just got started on the 5th season. Season 4 had some great episodes. I think my favorite seasons have been 3 and 4 so far. Past Tense 1 and 2 were amazing.

I thought that Worf was acting like a little girl most of the time and sometimes I thought he could get annoying.

Overall I think it is a very interesting series.

Nothing like a moody Klingon.

I liked when Basir and O'Brian and Dax were screwing with him in one episode about his scent! :lol

DS9 is a little tricky because after season 3, the stories became much more closely knit. It was one of the reasons there were almost no books written during the series' run.

Actually, the episode with older Jake is considered one of the best. It's called "The Visitor."

If you're just looking for individual episodes to watch, my list would be:
"Duet" :sort of psychological... not much for action. Of course, if you hate Kira and Cardassians, I wouldn't bother.
"Crossover" :the first of the mirror episodes. I thought it was fun and a good episode... later mirror episodes became over used and campy.
"Trials and Tribble-ations" :it's a fun look at the DS9 crew in TOS.
"The Quickening" :it's sad and powerful. A pretty stand alone episode.
"The Visitor" :already mentioned
"In the Pale Moonlight" :it's pretty far removed Roddenberry's box. It really shows a shade of gray and just how desperate times of war can be.

As a whole, I thought the series was great, and those are just a few choice episodes.

ds9 is my favorite of the treks, and after seasons 1-2 which are ok-good, 3 gets better, and 4-7 are where it hits its stride. "children of time" is a great episode too. very depressing ending i must say.

Last year, I watched them ALL in a span of a month. Best Star Trek experience I ever had. Sure, it doesn't start out great, but it sure beat the first two seasons of The Next Generation by not being utterly ridiculous.

i just finished 'in the pale moonlight.' Nice departure from season 1 and 2 cisco and reminded me of a bit of Shakespearean version of L.A. Confidential. I think cisco's baritone voice is a pretty good match for this dark machiavellian turn.

This was the 'darker, grittier DS9' that was promised to me the year or so before DS9 actually aired. So does Cisco stay on the 'Dark Side?' I hope he keeps some of that 'edge' with him on future episodes.

going to watch the 'visitor' next.

start when Worf gets on DS9

Pffft.. he provided NOTHING to DS9. They could have added a new Klingon character and did just the same. Really, all he showed up to do was marry yet another character and then just be an ass after the Trill symbiot was put in a new cuter model.

I would start with the second season finale and keep watching from there. Until then, the constant Bajoran religion shows bored the heck out of me.

Most people remember that Worf's arrival started the better story arcs, but it really began one season earlier.

When you watch In The Pale Moonlight out of sequence, you missed the previous episode where the characters condemned someone else's breaking the rules to protect the Federation, and yet in this one.....

Plus it helps to have a handle on the characters, especially Garak, who was my personal favorite.

But you can watch the Tribbles episode without any continuity problems, if I remember properly. Just pure fun.

It was utterly ridiculous that Avery Brooks was a Commander and had hair and was clean-shaven. You may as well have made him a girl. :lol

Here's my list:

Dramatic:
Duet (S1) - I liked some of the dramatic moments of this episode.
The Maquis I/II (S2) - Sets up the Maquis storyline - probably the best Maquis plot line and how it relates on a personal level to each side.
Past Tense I/II (S3) - Time Travel to talk about the poor (better than it sounds - very profound)
Explorers (S3) - Jake and Ben build an ancient Bajoran ship
The Visitor (S4) - Jake and time travel
Homefront/Paradise Lost (S4) - Changlings invade Earth?
Doctor Bashir, I Presume? (S5) - Doctor Bashir is modeled for a hologram
Statistical Probabilities (S6) - Doctor Bashir and a gang of misfits
Far Beyond the Stars (S6) - Sisko as a 50s SciFi writer
In the Pale Moonlight (S6) - Sisko and the Romulans
Chrysalis (S7) - Bashir and the misfits again

Comedic/Fun:
Q-Less (S1) - Not the best Q episode, but I loved the "You hit me! Picard never hit me!"
Little Green Men (S4) - Quark, Rom, and Nog crash in Roswell
Our Man Bashir (S4) - Bashir as James Bond (Garek: I think I joined the wrong intelligence agency)
Who Morns for Morn (S6) - Morn dies and Quark inherits.
Take Me Out to the Holosuit (S7) - Watch this one with a spirit of fun and you'll like it

Great (other):
Defiant (S3) - Riker steals the Defiant. Nothing more need be said.
To The Death (S4) - Iconian Gateway
Trials and Tribbulations (S5) - Kirk, Time Travel, and Tribbles
Sacrifice of Angels (S6) - HUGE Space Battles!!!
Inquisition (S6) - Bashir and Section 31
Valiant (S6) - Nog and Red Squad aboard a Defiant-class ship
inter Arma Enium Silent Leges (S7) - Bashir, Romulans, and Section 31
What You Leave Behind (S7) - Finale

Take Me Out to the Holosuite

Didn't care for that one. Okay, so the writers/producers like baseball. Well, I like cartoons, but I wouldn't write a Trek episode about Toontown.
