Debunking the color of Vaders Lenses for his ANH Helmet

Very cool.
You have gone above and beyond Mike and I am really impressed with what you have so far. Heck I do not know anyone that can get access to the archives to take color reference photos....impressive.

One really couldn't ask for a better analysis of this question, Mike,...you would make a great scientist :) :thumbsup

I can't wait to see the video. Even though you now have the tunic for reference, it's great that you've demonstrated one can address questions pertaining to color or lighting in reference to on-screen anomalies without actually having been there on set. And you've also set the bar for future questions in regard to other props as Jez mentioned the TK lenses.

We need you, Mike! :lol

If a whole slew of conditions are met, yes. You have to account for: The colorspace/gamut of your capture device, the colorspace/gamut of your display device (calibrated), and the presence of absolute reference among other things.

The level of scrutiny seen on this board is astounding, but in truth, 99% of us don't have the equipment to judge color accurately at all, even if we HAD absolute references, which I personally have never seen before I took my own.

My plan was to do the first video on a description of the conditions - why it's not just important, but crucial to take the entire chain of color capture, display, calibration, and reference in account before beginning a second of analysis. I was going to talk about the difference between the way the human eye perceives color, and the way color is captured on film or digital, white balancing, etc.. There's a ton of pre-qualifiers that have to go on before you can begin, otherwise your process is biased and your results hopelessly compromised.

Slightly off-topic but please tell me that LFL is going to hire you to colour correct the films when they do the HD transfer!

I know the powers-that-be are aware of my Legacy Edition restoration, but I doubt this would ever happen, since while I would happily do the work for free, I wouldn't do it for the SE version of ANH. It would just completely take the fun out of it for me, since almost everything in SE makes me cringe. Bringing the great results of the last 4 years of experience restoring every frame of the original ANH to everyone else is - and likely will always remain - a great dream of mine.

Yeah, but the official party line is that Star Wars as it was no longer exists. All prints are now SE, exclusively. So...

I don't pray for much, but I sure hope that changes someday.

Anyway....

Mike,

I actually have no vested interest in the Vader lenses, but I AM working on an Imperial Officer costume, and the post using the uniform color as a reference for the color correction has really helped me out.

The work you're doing to figure out the lens color is incredible. Almost reverse engineering the original print using color correction. Awesome!

Thanks Mike!

Anyone check the Revisited dvd? High res shows ridiculous detail! But knowing the extensive changes made, they're probably smoked now:lol
Hmm..........

No new word, but the old word still stands and it can be found in post #79. :p
Coming from someone who constantly updates his displays while claiming absolute accuracy every time it's shown, I think I'll wait for another expert opinion, thank you very much.

How about instead of fighting/bragging/baiting/flaming/arguing etc. etc. etc.... someone shoot Mike a PM and just ask him if he has any updates to share on the subject?

Just a thought. :angel
