Deadmau5 Head

can someone PLEASE tell me how / what are the dimensions of the mouth!?!? i just cant get it right! :(

Hey guys, I am new to this site and I fell in here from hours of googling how to make a deadmau5 head and so far this was the best site. I have a few questions I will be using an acrylic globe for the head but was wondering if I should use 14 or 16" not sure if the real one is a little bigger than 14, let me know. Also What can i use to light up the mouth, and lastly to cut the globe can i use something like a blade or something similar that wont be too pricey. Also the neck part has an openning of 5 1/4" will i need to make it bigger than that??? buy how much if I do....Thanks in advance for any help or tips you can possibly give me.

So far the people on this forum have been using the 14'' acrylic globe. As far as the neck hole, just make it that it fits your HEAD, if you make the hole extremely big it doesn't look good. For the tools to cut up the globe use a dremel, haven't heard of an alternate tool.

I love that white flock - seriously!

Good work man, you did a great job. I feel like I'm looking at one of my own builds haha.

Did you frost the mouth plastic or do you have thin fabric pulled over it?

Thanks dude. I photoshopped a bunch of different color combos and the white/black looked pretty sharp and I kinda thought it'd stand out if I were to ever go to a concert or something. You really basically are looking at your own build. I'm seriously giving all credit to you on a lot of this stuff. I'm kind of a perfectionist so when I saw how great yours were turning out, I literally sat down and sort of studied your pictures to figure things out - if I was going to put all this money and time into it, it had better be perfect or why do it at all?

The mouth is just covered in fabric. I've actually forgotten what kind it was already. I used a glue gun to attach the fabric to the top of the upper lip and bottom of the lower lip, keeping it stretched so there were no seams or overlaps. Once the fabric was in place, I threw the acrylic cutout behind it (this fabric is pretty stretchy) to form the spherical shape, and screwed it into the mdf lips.

Yea Wow! That head looks pretty crazy, good job!

Thanks I really appreciate it!

I don't mean to come off rude, but if you guys go back through this thread and read each post (I know 9 pages is alot, but it's not THAT much) you'll find all the answers you need. I'm pretty sure last page someone typed up a huge post full of their dimensions - all you have to do is go through and multiply the radius of your globe by the number he specifies. Just about every question has been answered, you just gotta find them!

The only thing I'll add is that I used a dremel solely for cutting/sanding the globe. To cut anything else (ears, etc), I used a jig saw.

I found that bridal cloth works the best for mouth fabric. Even though it doesn't have much stretch to it, the 'bridal chiffon' I used provided a perfect amount of solid color and just enough visual clarity for my needs.

Where can I get the acrylic globes for the head and eyes in Canada? Neither of the websites that Giz has mentioned in this forum ship to Canada :(

First time long time here. Thought I would share my latest creation.

Just wondering... how stetchy/flexible was that fabric? I remember seeing the different colored ones and I think they were pretty thin and loose right??? I don't remember too well though because it was actually my first time in a fabric store and I felt pretty awkward. Also that fabric.. I thought it would be pretty nice but then when I actually saw it in person I kinda just walked away from it (therefore not remembering too much how it felt). Any comments on it?

I covered the head in "batting" and then spray painted it black before my gf applied the fabric. It can be made to look perfect with just a few cut lines in the back. There is a little stretch in the fabric.

I like the smaller head and ears. Remember, if you're wearing this in public you want it light, comfortable and a reasonable size to maneuver through a crowded bar or Deadmau5 show. You can dance all night in this thing it's comfortable. The head is a reinforced giant hamster ball. I wanted something that would last forever and could take some abuse.

I also prefer the smaller mouth with the horizonal top lip. I don't like the way the large mouths look. And I don't like being able to see into the head through the mouth area. I used 6 layers of screen and you can still see 20-20 out of it.

The fabric on the ears is flawless. I couldn't find a technique online that allowed for perfect ears so I had to try several methods. I ended up using multiple layers of foam board. It's much more durable than that whit or green styrofoam you see some heads made with. The fabric was applied to one side and folded around the other (the ears start as 2 pieces/ear). The sides where the fabric was wrapped around were then sandwiched in the middle.

The head took about 40hrs to make. And cost about $125 dollars in supplies. I was lucky, as I had a friend willing to rent it on halloween night to wear to a party so I've already recouped all of my money.

Even though Joel posted those 'dimensions' himself, they don't even look right when you compare images of his mau5heads.

Perfect example is this picture:

If you look closely, the top of the mouth and the ears are NOT 105 degrees apart. They look more like to 90 degrees to me.

I was just going to post this *face palm to face* at least I was close head was 14'' and ears 14x13 lol mouth, was slightly off could fix that though

He said that some of the heads differ slightly. The specs he gave are based on the Halloween head he has. The black and red one.

Got pointed to this forum from a friend. I made a Mau5head for Halloween there and got some good tips on here.

What Im wondering is though, the people who stitched material and then stretched it over. Could you post up the pattern cut of the material and dimensions used? I am planning on making another couple of Mau5heads, one for his UK tour.

Heres a pic of mine, for a first effort I was pleased, eyes need to be smaller, next time I won't use any fencing to support the material over the mouth, the "chin" area needs to be slightly smaller too.

Now if only Daft Punk would do this same thing. :p

That's seriously awesome though. I may have to have a go, now that there are some "Official Measurements."

Thanks for posting those.
