Davy Jones Mask continues

Slight disaster but a wee silver cloud.
I tried the mould with latex and it worked ok.

I wAnted to try with silicon, but only had a small amount left on the shelf.
I worked, but I cracked the plaster mould getting it out.

So I think I'll go to plan B :D
I'll fix the master clay again, then create a resin/ fibreglass mould set for various sizes.

It might be a bit laborious, but the end result should be a better finish.

Here's a photo of the little silicone version.

It's a bit rubbery (duh) , but I've heard of deadner you can add to make it more flesh like.
Has anyone used it?

If you want a Good flesh looking silicone, try Platsil Gel-10..
it's A Great silicone to use for this type of mask or any prosthetic skin as it will look and move like real skin, you can also use silicone fluid with the silicone to make it softer, but they Do sell a Gel-00 which is soft already.
Using deadner will leave the surface sticky and it can stick to your mould.

I used gel-10 on my robocop face and I highly recommend it,
you can also use the Gel-10 with solvents to airbrush your mask for a very realistic finish.:D
Great Work so far!!

I was looking for advice on this and what you've suggested is exactly what I need to know.
I'll order some tomorrow :D

Hi.
I sent you a private message of my current supplier of gel-10 as I have only found 1 supplier in the UK That stocks it..

There are a couple of tricks to get a very good base for you mask straight out.

1. Mix some flocking into the gel-10 silicone when casting
2. Use flesh pigment (but only to the lightest color of Davy Jones)

Flocking is used to create veins/texture under the surface skin, makes it look very real close-up, I use red & Flesh Flocking with Human skin, So a green or blue Flocking color will look awesome with yours.

Have you thought about having a few tentacles move up like in the film..

you can mould cable's into the tentacles and pull them together in the costume to lift them up..!!
cheap bicycle cables will work Good
you can also have the key on one tentacle...:cool

How are your getting on with your mask.?
Looking forward to see how you get on with the GEL-10 :D

Hi,
Due to work commitments I was away, so haven't had much chance to do anything more as yet.
I'm also working at fixing up my workshop to get rid of some stuff nod give me more room, but I'll get something done in the next week or so :(

Hi guys,
Due to work commitments and working on my new basement workshop, I've not had time to get much done on my Davy Jones sculpture / mask.
I've one awe bit and started making the pipe.
I'll keep you posted, but I'm conscious of the timescale is rapidly diminishing, as I need to get the whole costume finished no later than mid August.
But here's a wee picture to date, with a couple of tentacles and the pipe bowl at the front.
Ive only just started the pipe bowl so there's very little detail yet.

Just an update guys, but still a bit away.......

I thought I'd create a wee practice piece for me to test various bits and bobs, paint, techniques etc.

I painted some layers of latex at the bottom of he sculpt, just around the chin area.
I also made a mould for a " secondary" tentacle, made a couple, then stuck them on. The colour difference is due to me putting some acrylic paint into the latex when making one of them, but not the other.

First time - not too shabby, but loads to do.

The pic shows the hat in progress too, but that's a bit away also. See my other post for the WIP on. The hat.

Keep watching, and as always, comments welcome.

Disaster strikes :sick

having spent ages doing the sculpt, and casting the plaster mould, i cracked the mould.
Obviously, the original was destroyed, getting it free from the mould.
so ive stuck and filled the crack, which luckily enough, is at the back, and can be dressed later, and started the latex pour.
i decided on latex, for costs as this mask will only be worn for one night then probably given away to someone.

Moral of the story ......?
listen to the forum,
Dont scrimp on the materials,
take more time checking for undercuts.

On the plus side.... I learned some new unpronouncable swear words, and found out I can say them at 140 decibels

Ya gotta laugh :(

I'll post the results later

So here we are,
The first "pull" and starting to fit the tentacles.
The was some damage by the crack in the mould, but it was dremeled off and behind the ears anyway, so if anything remains, it will be hidden by the hat,

The one next to it is a silicon one, filled with foam , just in case I have to recast, at least I've got a start.

I'm going to make a couple, for as long as the mould holds out, just in case, I makes job of it and decide to try and get some costs back :D

Anyway, as usual, comments welcome

Hi Claymore,

If your getting rid of any, let me know, I may be interested. Great thread.

Cheers bud.

Might just do that . I'll let you know later.
I've been working on the hat which is felt etc, and because of work, pressures, I've been unable to spend a lot of time.
I've only got 5 weeks to finish lol.

I'm actually thinking of creating a silicon bust or something, but I think a chose a hard subject for one of my earliest sculpts.

A wee update for the mask.
I'm still fixing tentacles on, and still need to paint, but getting there.
Also made the hat, so I've put it on to try it for size. I'll need to glue some shells etc on to the hat to complete the effect.

I've nearly finished the pipe and the claw, so once I get it nearly done, I'll put some more pix on, but maybe taken with a camera rather than the iPad.

Comments welcome, but bear in mind it's my first mask :D
I think I picked a difficult one for my first but I'm in there now:D

I know this is the sculpture forum, but this is where the process started so I thought I'd put the final version in here too

Well here it is guys..... The final costume.

BTW I haven't lost a leg, it's designed to tuck out of the way for photo ops.

comments welcome

This is brilliant! Love the work on the tentacles

Looks great. Only thing is that the tentacles look a little stiff. Like you got a stick in every one of them hehe :)
(I couldnt do it better myself though) :D
