Dave Prowse banned from C5 !!

Howard, it is called "Don't poke the bear". The bit actors seems to have this firmly in their head..."Don't **** off Lucas"...but Prowse cannot wrap his head around this simple fact.

You mean 'Beard.' :$
Understood, Qui. :)

Prowse has been vocally bitter about Lucas for 33 years now. He usually couches it in gentler terms nowadays, but the undercurrent is always there.

He always points out, without overtly expressing a judgment, that he was dubbed over by a black actor. What's behind that?

And it still confounds me how a man who had already appeared in films and thus knew a little about filmmaking would have expected to hear his voice in the film, having never gone in for any dubbing sessions. Did he really think the production audio of his voice muffled behind that mask would be in any way usable? Clueless.

And even if it was...well, just listen to the performance:

Pew.

I think Prowse himself related a story of someone saying to him "David, Darth Vader isn't from Bristol."

My understanding is that things between Prowse and LFL have been heading down hill since filming wrapped on ANH.

I'm sure someone will correct me on this, but over the years I have heard from several sources that Prowse's involvement in ROTJ was very limited. In fact, much if not all of the entire end sequence in the Emperor's Throne Room was Bob Anderson in the suit.

And just because someone is credited doesn't mean that they ARE the character...Kenny Baker got credit for Artoo in ROTS and never appeared in one shot of the film. LFL just threw that bone to him so he could keep making a living signing autographs. And he only appeared in 1 or two shots in AOTC.

Prowse may have been the first guy in the suit, but that doesn't make him Vader. James Earl Jones, Bob Anderson, Ben Burtt, etc. were all equally important in creating the character of Vader that we know and love.

Just my thoughts...

i was going to defend prowse for saying "well, you wouldnt have that pointing, and standing, and head moving and "darth vader" mannerisms if it werent for him in the suit saying the lines" but then i heard them and am glad for the voice over.

but still. he didnt just show up and do elaborate poses. he learned the part.

lol, he sounded "short" and wussy to me. if i came from a cave and never saw anything starwars related.

This sums it up for me, very well said Jason. It was a collaborative effort.

you could stick almost anyone in that suit and people will still think it's Darth Vader - the 501st goes around visiting kids and they believe the person in front of them is the real deal. That said - this reminds me of an interview I saw with William Shatner where he was trying to come to reason with everyone from the cast hating him - He said - back when TOS was being made, he considered the top three cast members to be himself, Nimoy and Deforrest Kelly - no one can argue that. Everyone else came in one or two times during the week and shot their stuff but for the most part they were not part of the higher members circle and they were fine with that, nothing too harsh was said or implied --- then came the conventions. The fans fed the egos of the second and third and now even fifth rate cast members so much that they started to believe that it was they themselves who made the show what it was and without them it would have never worked. This is what made them strike out at Shatner - who always saw Star Trek as nothing more than a paycheck.

I think DP (no pun intended) is probably in a similar boat. Over the years people have fed him so much love and praise that he started to believe it.

One thing I will give to Prowse is he did help Christopher Reeve BULK up to play the man of steel and even though I don't think Prowse is Vader, I do KNOW that Christopher Reeve IS Superman!

Doesn't all this animosity from Lucas go back to a pre-ESB release interview where David spilled some info about the film? Not the Vader as Luke's father as he was given different dialogue in his scripts.

I believe he said "Enjoy these movies while you can because the prequels are going to suck" :lol

I think it had to do with Prowse wanting more bank, if I recall.

I never really cared for Prowes (and I've spent a good bit of time with him in person). He's a bitter dirty old man.:thumbsdown

I tell ya, bitter and dirty is a lot more interesting than someone talking 'bout Wookiees all the ****ing time.

While you may not get a handle on what type of person a man or woman is from the internet, you certainly can by spending an hour with them.

I've met him a couple of times and he was friendly and pleasant. I don't think this thread is judging him as a whole, just discussing this particular clash of attitudes between himself and George.

Prowse was the body and mannerisms of Vader. JEJ the voice.Ben Burtt the sound FX....

Vader is more than one man.

prowse, however nice a guy, has lied about stuff in the past, ( saber fighting Evidenced by the publicity pic of him in slacks and suit fighting Hamill in fatigues)....his disgruntled attitude RE: helmet reveal and voice......

C'mon......the guy's contribution is great only on fanboy reflection, but, truth be told, he was just a big guy that filled a leather suit.....even the FX staff couldn't tell his accent. One guy thought he was Scottish!!!!!

I hate myself for saying these things, being a bit of a Vader fanatic, but, the truth is the truth.....

You've got it, Jay. It all boils down to this: "I want more money, you cheat! Hey, can I still come and make money at your event?"
