Darunia - Ocarina of Time build

Uuuugh! Laying hair is horrible!
I'm covered in little bits of it and I keep finding it everywhere, and I've gone through an entire box of disposable gloves because as soon as the fingers get sticky they start pulling off the hair you're carefully laying out and you end up with a matted mess. That said, spray adhesive is a marvellous permanent hairspray and the small cans are very controllable. It is looking good, though progress is painstakingly slow.

I take little 5mm (1/5 inch) bunches of hair, trim the end to square it off, spray the small linear area to lay it over, push the squared-off end into the base firmly and apply tension with my other hand to lay the fibres as straight and flat as possible. The hair is fluffy at this point, so I give it a misting with more adhesive and move on to lay another piece elsewhere before going back in with the back of my hand to smooth the hair down over the foam.

It looks so tangly in the photo but it's much less ridiculous in person, looks more like the spike on the right. That one also has the white hair streaks over the top to add those highlights. Much better. Now for hours and hours more hair work. *looooong deflating balloon fart noise*

Had to take a break from full-on costuming because of other stuff (though I'm still laying hair!)

Made this in the meantime! 9 hour build :p

The client - my son - was extremely happy!

I've been procrastinating about laying down Darunia's face this week, I've been working over any time I can but it's so slow as always. Still, he now has a face and isn't just a block of weird foam any more. Still needs a buttload more hair (there's a lot on the back of his head but almost nothing on the front yet!) and a lot of definition using paint but I'm liking the shapes I'm getting so far.
The vision is surprisingly good! I'd like shiny eyes in an ideal world, so if I can find a 3 inch diameter watch glass or other kind of clear lens shape with the right kind of dome I'll use them. This will do for now, less interference with vision is always a good thing.

Pins all gone now. :D

Have you considered those clear plastic christmas ornaments which are split in half so you can put things inside them? They come in a wide variety of sizes. I assume you want a shallow curve, in which case you can get a large ornament and slice part of it off so it's no longer a full hemisphere (this would also allow you to make the eyes whatever size you need). I did precisely that for my Samus costume's hip, shin, and hand circles.

Hi!
I have used smaller clear ornaments before for all sorts of stuff, never thought of slicing sections off a larger one before though, cool idea. Thanks!
I actually ended up finding these:

They're glass used for putting over clock faces. Ideally plastic would be better for safety but it interferes with vision far less than any plastic I've seen and they come in a whopping great variety of sizes. It was a pain trying to find them but there are plenty of sellers on ebay who carry lots of kinds. If I could find a company who did a plexiglass version with the same kind of clarity and lack of distortion it'd be ideal, but for now these will do just fine :)

Talaaya I have used those half spheres for fake eyes, but they are very difficult to see out of because of the curve. It would make anyone dizzy looking through them for an extended period of time.

fallimar that is a very interesting website. I may have use for it in the future. Thank you for sharing.

I've been working on hair and trying to figure out the attachment and glove arrangement for the hand extensions. The fingers work, but they're a little stiff and need some trimming to fit together into a fist, but once the fabric's on they'll probably squish together a lot anyway so I'm not too worried.

There's just so much to do on the hair. I can't see him being finished for Supnova next month, I just don't have the time I need to get him sorted :(
Oh well. Just keep going, just keep going... and work on fixing up the Space Pope for OzCC Sydney!

So much to do. Can't wait to get on to the airbrushing though, it always looks so much nicer when it's all defined. Got to put the eye glasses in too.

In better news, I've ordered an adjustable dress form so I can work on the body pod (and you know, everything else) more easily. It'll be so nice not having to do everything on my own body, it's so awkward that way!
