I need to know from some hard core Vader experts some facts about the costume.
1) Can anyone post a good pic of the chest aromor and which shoulder bell goes on which side? I have a Ghost host armor and am going attach the bells
2) Regarding the bells and chest armor. How were the bells attached to the chest in ESB I like the look where the bells are slightly under the chest armor like in the pic where vader is in his meditation chamber. Please be specific as im planning on attaching the bells in the same way.
3) Was there ever a cape hook used for the ESB/ROTJ armor. How about ANH?
4) In all three OT movies, was there a satin hem along the bottom of the cape or what it leather. Was it there at all???
5) exactly what kind of material is the cape made of? Ive seen many pics where it looks like a wool crepe.
I appreciate your help .

I appreciate the input. Pics are welcome,,,,please.. The question that needs the most attention now is exactly how the bells were attached to the chest. Any pics of that?

Hey Prowler,
I'm very protective of the vader knowledge that I have for a multitude of reasons.
I don't feel comfortable answering all your questions, but the ones I do answer, you can take to the bank.

"2) Regarding the bells and chest armor. How were the bells attached to the chest in ESB I like the look where the bells are slightly under the chest armor like in the pic where vader is in his meditation chamber. Please be specific as im planning on attaching the bells in the same way."

Actually, the bells were attached two different ways in both ESB and ROTJ.
There is the hinge method, and the strap method. The hinge method butts the edge of the bell against the edge of the armor for a flush look. The strap method makes the bells hang down a bit from the armor. BOTH methods are used in BOTH esb and rotj and share about equal screen time. Either is accurate, it's just a matter of preference.

"3) Was there ever a cape hook used for the ESB/ROTJ armor. How about ANH?"

Not in ANH at all. But it did appear first in esb. Although 90% of the time, most of the armor you see in esb did not use the cape hook. All sets of rotj armor used it.

"4) In all three OT movies, was there a satin hem along the bottom of the cape or what it leather. Was it there at all???"

The only place leather appears on any cape is on the collar. What you see at the bottom of the cape is the same material as the lining, but against popular belief, the lining isn't satin either. It's something else.

Different materials for different movies.

Prowler, the cape hook used on the Jedi shoulder amour was a small brass curtain hook. They're a little out of date as most are plastic now but you should be able to still find them.

I might still have one somewhere if you get stuck.

Im most interested in going with the ESB look. I appreciate all your input. I have been aware for quite a while that the outer cape material is indeed wool and the fact that the intter "satin" satin lining isnt satin at all. I remember when I saw the film used cape back in the early 80's the capes liner wasnt as shiney as it appears on film which indicated it isnt satin. Ive gone so long without knowing what it actually is that I have resigned to the habit of calling it "satin" Does anyone know exactly what this material is?
-Jo

I'm just guessing, but I would think that perhaps it was silk? Parachute silk has that type of texture.

Either way, I guess the mystery fabric will remain a mystery....

I've studied the capesets quite a bit as well, and I would agree that different materials are used in each movie. For example, in ANH the cape material looks to be a heavy suiting wool, similar to that used in military dress coats.

It's doubtful that you will find an exact match but there are different suppliers which have a wool or wool blend with a similar weave.

Is there a Darth Vader refrence cd still available from anyone here? I wouldnt mind having one.

There was an older one (I have that one) and SithLord is putting together a newer one.

Im open to any information anyone has to offer....

Its very difficult to position the shoulder bells in order to use the straps to secure them to the chest armor. It looks like the bells are set foreward which leaves a pretty big gap toward the back. Does anyone have any pics of the uderside of their armor?

I actually permanently fiberglassed the bells of my GINO armor to the body after trying several different methods.

I am getting GH armor soon that apparently already has a good system in place. When I get it I'll be happy to share pics.

Please do. Will anyone else be willing to share pics of how and where the fastening points are under the armor?

If it's not satin then what is it? Silk?

I could be irresponsible and say I know it's polyester cotton. But hell would have to freeze over before I say what percentage is cotton. But I can say you need to use a delicate wash and number 2 on the iron setting :lol

On capes and robes there have been used satin for ages.. Why in gods name change this?

Ok... For all of you Vader super accurate guys...
The best way to get it accurate enought is probably send it in to a scientific labratory for check.

1. What material combinations is used for the fabric of the cape and robe.
2. What color cobination is used.
3. What woven teqnique is used.
4. What thread quality was used and how thick was it and what color code was used on it.
5. The leather that was used was it cow, cheep, chinese dog, deer skin and what coloration code and method was used.
6. What lining was used, Was is 95% satin or was it 90 % satin....
Or even worse was it 50% cotton and 50 % other material and if so what material was this.
7. How did they stich it. Was it double stiching, Cross over, locking stich... Man if this is done wrong your wearing an inaccurate replica.

:angel :angel

You cant get it accurate til you know all of this...
