"darth" strange scripting in ANH

I noticed that several times in ANH, Ben calls Vader by his Title "Darth", as if it were his first name. Is this just Alec Guinness not caring enough (I know he didn't) to read the script, or is it GL, or some other mistake? Just a querie...

Back in 77 Darth Vader was his NAME. After Star Wars became "BIG" it was retconned that "Darth" was a Sith Lord title. Darth Vader and Anakin Skywalker WERE two different people and Obi-Wan told Luke the truth about what happened.

Only later did it all get convoluted and changed to fit whatever toy marketing movie Lucas was trying to come up with at the time.

He also refers to him as 'a young jedi named Darth Vader.' 'Darth' was the bloke's first name for sure.
Yeah, we wouldn't want to confuse the kid in case he came up against Darth Vader by telling him some other name. Imagine the exchange.

"Who are you?"

"I'm Darth Vader!"

"Who the **** is that?"

"Obi-Wan's apprentice!"

"Oh... weren't you called Anakin Skywalker, you silly pansy."

"**** YOU... YOU DIE!!! That name no longer has any meaning to me!"

Vader cuts Luke to pieces for reminding him who he was too soon in their relationship.

End of story.

That's it exactly.

I don't even know anymore... according to Lucas it was always meant to be that way... but if you take his message that it's okay to lie if it's true from a certain point of view into account... :wacko

So if we look at it as it stands now, he says "Darth." This is a sort of title for members of the Sith. To Obi-wan he is no longer "Anakin," but a Dark Lord of the Sith. He isn't going to give him the respect of saying "Lord Vader" like everyone else in the Empire. He says "Only a master of evil, Darth..." basically calling him a "Darth" or Sith Lord. It's his way of showing Vader that he no longer thinks of him as Anakin, but a Dark Lord. In the second instance he says it, it almost seems like he's goading him. He says he cannot win and even has a playful look in his eyes as he says it. He says "Darth" again... when the use of this name a second time is redundant. Obviously he doesn't need to let him know who he's talking to. He's the only one there and they've been talking already. So it could part of his goading... a lack of respect in his title... saying that's he's just a "Darth" and not the Jedi Master he had always wanted to be.

Of course the easier answer is that there was no big plan for Star Wars and it was just a movie.

I never bought into this 'Darth' thing used as a Sith Title.
Maybe the name 'Darth' was the equivalent of the name 'Dork' in the Star Wars world.

And a bit of trivia--Obi-Wan "Ben" Kenobi is the only character in any of the six films to refer to him as "Darth"; everyone else called him Darth Vader, Lord Vader, or simply Vader.

Darth Vader was his name. He was not Anakin Skywalker. It was not a title.

ANH was pre-crap.

I always took it to be his name too and then later all the Anakin being Vader stuff came into play. I'd have actually liked to have seen the movies done as if they were still two separate people.

if ROTS REALLY happened before ANH, wouldnt that fight between Old Ben and "Darth" been a little more emotional?

from:

"I love you like a BROTHER Anakin! you where supposed to RID the galaxy of the sith, not join them?!

"Only a master of evil darth (flat)

Nah. A lot of time had passed since Obi-Wan and Anakin/Vader had seen each other; everything Vader did in the interim made Obi-Wan realize he truly was no longer Anakin.

lucas didnt have a plan....regardless of what anyone thinks

when the first came out he hid away in hawaii cause he thought it would be a total disaster.....he didnt plan for 2 more movies or 3 prequels...

he made it all up as he went...and later on when he made more money on toys than the movies what did he gear things to?

toy sales..

just the way it is......btw, just read an article which said last year starwars toy sales were 500+ million....record year for starwars toys in a non movie release year.

heres looking forward to 3d releases every year starting soon...

TOYS!!!

Well that told me. I guess I just thought what Zombie_61 said, no-one else called him Darth, so I assumed it was a scripting error. Perhaps I jumped to conclusions.

Maybe George will please us in the 3D releases like mez7 says and replace it with a giant CGI Bantha to hide the fact.

If I were Lucas, I'd reboot the OT..to make it mesh with the prequels. In fact, I would squeeze another episode in between ROTS and ANH to show the Jedi Purge and Vader's rise. ANH would become EP V.

:confused

Umm...

No.

RPF card. Hand it in.

If anything he should reboot the PT. Have Anakin as a kid for only a flashback scene. Have the clone wars at the 2nd half of pt2. End Pt2 with Anakin Obi fight. Vader and purge rise of the empire for Pt.3 (and call it Rise of the empire)

It's obvious that after the release of SW, when Lucas decided to make Vader Luke's Dad, he had to find some way of connecting Luke's name to Vader. So he decides to make 'Darth Vader' just an alias used by this Anakin Skywalker chappie. Then for the preeks he decides to turn 'Darth' into this Sith title bollocks. It's a rubbish idea because the name Darth is glorious - a blindingly obvious mix of 'death' and 'dark', but which no one had ever heard before - and should remain the exclusive moniker of one of the greatest villains in film history. All these other non-entity Darths just dilutes the thing.
