Darkside501st's Iron Man Mk VII pepakura files - Password in First Post

Re: Darkside501st's Iron Man Mk VII pepakura files

Really awesome work with the files. I just got interested in pepakura some days ago. I've read through lots and lots of threads since then and watched lots of videos at youtube (including TheHeroTutorials which are awesome). I'll buy 110lb cardstock next week and start building. Atleast I hope it's cardstock, no idea what it's called in Sweden. 110lb converts to 200gm/2 as far as I can tell.

Hey Darkside501st! first off im new to the whole Pep scene and what not, but am extremely impressed with what your doing here!!! second just a quick questing about the ab plate/lower back... Is there a way to rig it so the each section on the ab plate would be a sepearte piece, to ad a bit of flexibility in the suit?? Or if theres any advice you would be able to give in regards to this would be extremely helpful!

Re: Darkside501st's Iron Man Mk VII pepakura files

Heya, Darkside. Thanks. I have been costuming for years with the 501st, so I'm pretty handy with assembly and paint-up, but have never done any pep.

Did whoever ever create MAC-friendly pep software?

Re: Darkside501st's Iron Man Mk VII pepakura files

I actually want to make a mark III/VII hybrid.
The Mark III with the Mark VII extras

Removable detail and the removable rocket pack.

any thoughts on that? aesthetically pleasing ? or no?...

I think this can be a cool design.

Re: Darkside501st's Iron Man Mk VII pepakura files

First off, Thanks to everyone coming here to check out my thread and thanks for the appreciation.

Looks almost exactly like a Mark3 neck other than they added a section to the middle spine extention piece. It would be an easy mod to do to the Mark3 neck.

I think the Mark IV/VI neck is closer. The Mark III has a design that goes up each side of the neck separating the front from the back. The Mark IV/VI and the VII do not. Just my 2 cents.

DARKSIDE. Wow. All of this is RAD.
Anyhow, I have a quick, general question:

I've only skimmed this thread, but I gather a majority of the VII files are still a slight WIP. I've not poured myself into comparing pep files to ref images (not yet anyway), but of the WIP files, which ones would you all suggest I start with now whilst other files are modified? ie, Which ones do you all think are most accurate in their current iteration?

The files I have posted (version 1) are not really WIP files they are complete although with the new images that were released I noticed some differences in the details. I am going to rework my model to add/modify these details and release it as a version 2. If you are gonna do a foam build then version 1 will give you what you need. Just work with the pictures and make a few minor changes if you want... regardless, everyone will know you are wearing the Mark VII. Check out some pics that were posted of the awesome foam builds that other members did.

The regular pep file is built to do just that... if you are using the foam templates all of those details were removed. As far as how to connect it... that is up to you and your creativity. I posted a while back about a technique that looks good and is pretty easy. Take a look back to the page I started talking about the abs and find it (hint search 'ab flex system')

The base of the Mark VII is incredibly close to the Mark III. I am not sure that anyone would know the difference... they would probably think it was just a Mark VII that was a little off or missing some details. But who knows, it could turn out kick-ass!

darkside501st, excellent work... keep it up. Do you have an ETA on the version 2 files? Thanks for doing this!

Re: Darkside501st's Iron Man Mk VII pepakura files

Guys, how would it cost to 3D-print a whole armour with something like this?

3D metal printing - YouTube

MANY tens of thousands of dollars (Possibly over 100K) if you're looking to have it printed at a reasonable thickness to stand up to some wear and tear...and then it would still have to be smoothed after the fact.

Stainless steel tends to run about 6-9 dollars a cubic centimeter when it comes to 3D Printing!!!

I really don't know why you'd even attempt to construct it in this way. The real suits weren't metal, the cost is prohibitive, it would be semi-fragile, and very heavy.

I'd stick with pep...or if you have the money, get it printed in plastic and mold and cast it in something stronger and more durable.

Ouchies. I'll stick to fiberglass resin then. :p

Re: Darkside501st's Iron Man Mk VII pepakura files

Question for you darkside, what basic height or size are these files designed for? Thanks.

Re: Darkside501st's Iron Man Mk VII pepakura files

Does anyone have the files for the chest and back without the jet pack? Edited for foam would be nice too.

My school is getting a 3d printer for next term; if one were to use normal (but thick enough) plastic, could the cost of the powder be worth 3d printing it?

Re: Darkside501st's Iron Man Mk VII pepakura files

As a noob to this forum, just wanted to say thank you for taking the time to work on this. I think your "preliminary" files are pretty darn close to what I'm seeing in the reference photos.

Wish I had a clue as to how to 3D model like you and some others do. I wouldn't know where to start.

Not as an end in itself. The process leave a fairly brittle, textured surface. So the texture would have to be filled and smoothed and then the entire thing molded and cast in another material (like fiberglass or urethane resin) in order to make it durable enough for wear.

A few members here have 3D printed large portions of their suits, and each time, they used the print only as a digital sculpture to smooth and mold to make the final suit from.

If you have access to the equipment, it can't hurt to try experimenting with it a bit to get a sense for the material and process.

Darkside, do you have any progress pics of what you're working on right now?

I love threads with tons of pics.

Re: Darkside501st's Iron Man Mk VII pepakura files

Yeah, I was curious about the helmet. Is there a better version to go with the Mark VII suit, or should I just wait until you release one? I wanna get the helmet pepped and resined first because I plan to work on the servos before I go with the rest of the suit.

Re: Darkside501st's Iron Man Mk VII pepakura files

Thanks everyone I am glad that you all like my version 1 files. Working on version 2... keep posted.

Question for you darkside, what basic height or size are these files designed for? Thanks.

I figure that at a scale of 23 these would fit a person that is about Robert Downey Jr's size... between 5'7" to 5'8". I could be a little off. I made these to be at the same scale as Robo3687's Mark IV/VI files so that people that have experience with them could offer assistance on scale. If you are closer to 6' tall then try a scale of 25 or 26.

Does anyone have the files for the chest and back without the jet pack? Edited for foam would be nice too.

I did not create such a file... you could use the MkIII back... it is very similar in shape, just change the details.

Me too! I love seeing everyone's progress pics. As far as my version 2 progress... I don't have much to show right now. I have been busy with some other things. We have a convention coming up and I have to modify my Tony Stark costume a bit. I will let you guys know as I get some stuff done.

Sharkmark's Mk VI helmet is fine. There are just a couple of minor changes for the Mk VII helmet but they are barely noticeable.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

One of the things I have to redo for my Tony Stark costume is the hand pep. The first time I made it I had a heck of a time getting into the little grooves around the repulsor. Also, there was no clear way to attach the top of the hand to the bottom. I modified Zabana's Hand file to take care of these issues. I made the repulsor a separate piece so that you can get in there and work on the inside of the palm without it getting in the way. I also took Surreal Studio's idea on how to separate the top and the bottom hands and incorporated that into the model. This will result in stronger bridges in between the fingers. I have uploaded it to the skydrive (link in first post). Here is a few pics:
