Re: Darkside501st's Iron Man Mk VII pepakura files
Ok guys Josh wrote back and we didnt get all t he answers we wanted but here is what he said:
Hey Mike,Here's your answers.
1. First, I was wondering, why is the jetpack and lower back flaps ejected in the movie? Did the chest flaps get ejected at the same time? Why or what was the though process behind that? You also mentioned that the forearm parts didn’t get ejected in the movie. I don’t remember seeing the thigh parts ejected in the movie either. When did that happen?
I haven't paid close enough attention to the movie to see when everything ejects but the idea behind them ejecting was they had extra ammo or weapons in them. Then once they were used, they could be ejected to reduce weight. Why the back pieces fall off at the end.... i'm not sure.
2. It doesn’t look like there is enough room for the missile compartment on his shoulder. When you toggle back and forth between the turnaround with and without the jetpack/shoulder armor there is not that much difference in height. What can you tell me about that?
Not sure. I never made the missiles in my model.
3. Also, I was wondering about the silver parts at the front of the jetpack shoulder units (right in front of the little missile compartment). Is there anything under there? Was there an idea at some point that the silver part would flip up and fire a rocket or something… maybe Hammer Tech’s ex-wife, lol?
Most of the compartments were made so they could put something in them later. The idea was that could either be a latch to keep it in place, or it could open and have missiles or something in it. Maybe it had the flares in it?
4.The knee hinges have been driving me crazy… Not only can I not seem to get the proportions right but I’m not even sure how it is supposed to work. I might have to send a picture or two to explain what I mean so let me know if that would help or if you understand with just my explanation. So on previous models you could actually see the pivot point and the ‘hardware’ that would represent the hinge. On this model it is covered up. So is the part you see, the ‘cover’, attached to the thigh and does the bottom of this ‘cover’ stick out towards the front when he bends his knee like in the Kotobukiya statue? I have not been too sure because the statue also shows the knee plate attached to the shin, as if it were one piece like on the Mk III, but in the movie and other reference it looks like the knee plate is ‘floating’ between the thigh and the shin and is perhaps attached to the inner armor parts of the knee. So if they got that wrong then they might be wrong about some other functions of the suit. (I also think the forearm on the statue is turned too far… the rocket pods should be facing out not down and I don’t like how the shoulder bells are flared up)
You're right about the Kotobukiya statue, the upper plate of the kneepad should be with the thigh. In fact, it should split and they 2 pieces of the kneepad should try to keep an equal distance while opening. They also flared the shoulders too much and his ab plates are too exposed because his chest is rotated too far back.
As for the knee movement, the sides of the knee should telescope and go up into the thigh when the knee bends.
5. I also noticed that in your turnaround the gold piece on the outside of the thigh that sticks up behind the hip pod looks like it might be tucked into the cod piece on your model… it was sticking out on the Koto statue. Is it tucked in or does it just but up against the cod? If it buts up against it then what happens when he moves his leg back? Can you describe how this piece moves? Is it attached to the hip pod? Does it slide up and down in a channel on the thigh as he walks?
6. Also wondering what is under the panels on the back of the calf… one of the guys said that rocket thrusters are under there just like on the ribcage panels. He also said that he saw another set of flames shooting out from under the lower flaps on the back… can you shine any light on that? And what is with the flaps on the sides of his calf/shin armor? Do you know their purpose?
The backpack itself is another booster for him, so there are boosters there. That's what the flames you're seeing are. This makes it so he doesn't always have to use his hands to propel himself and can shoot while flying.
The flaps on the sides of the shins have boosters under them, but the lines on the back are just panel lines. I don't remember anything crazy going on there.
7. How do the elbows work? From your turnarounds it looks like the top of the elbow slides under the biceps/triceps armor. Is this right? Can you explain in more detail? What about the bottom of the elbow… is it just resting on the upper/inner forearm?
It shouldn't slide under anything. It should lock into place there and create one solid form. The bottom of the elbow/top of the forearm should be the same. When the arm is extended, it should all lock into what should feel like a solid piece.
8. What about the other arm and shoulder weapons? In the movie it only shows one arm rocket shot out from his left forearm and one set of missiles launched from the shoulder missile pod on his right side but what about the other arm/shoulder weapons? Are they supposed to be the same on both sides or is there something different that we didn’t see?
9. So if this suit was meant to be a mix between Iron Man and War Machine did you model any of the weapons and are there any other weapons that were not used in the movie?
I didn't make any weapons, just the suit. All the weapon's were chosen and made later.
10. As you know a picture is worth a 1000 words. Some of the following questions would be best served by seeing some more pictures of your model. So, I would really appreciate it if you would capture some more images to share with me?
If so, I would love to see a picture of the flaps open. There has been some discussion/confusion on the shapes of the flaps, especially the lower flaps and how they open/what angle they open at, etc. I would also very much like to see what is under the upper flaps… the ‘jetpack’ exhaust ports if you know what I mean. It also looks like after the ‘jetpack’ is ejected the back under it also has secondary flaps. If this is the case could I get a picture of those flaps open?
What's under the flaps changed after i was done, and you'll see now that in reference it has a honeycomb'ish grating there. as for the back, we never did anything with the flaps open. I only worked on when the suits was closed and then basic movement things.
11. I see in your pictures that the handplate fits into the forearm to make a nice smooth line as opposed to sitting on top of it like in the Mk III. Is there another part of the forearm armor that the hand plate rests on or maybe it is an open gap or just has a ledge to rest on? Maybe a picture of this would be best too.
It's just an open gap. Since this suit was fully CG... we could cheat more things to favor the design.
12. I would really like to see a side view of the suit with the arms removed for clarification.
Not sure if i can do that. I'll have to check.
13. Is it possible to get a picture of the missile compartment on his jetpack/shoulder unit with the doors in the open position?
Like i said above, didn't do this.
14. We would also like to see the tread pattern of the boots.
Not sure if i can do that. I'll have to check. Do the toys have treads?
-Hope that helps,
Josh
So I have a better idea of what he did with the model and what Marvel did with it after he made it. I asked a few more questions. I am going to go ahead and start reworking the model. I will make a SD version and an HD version.
