OK, I was a fan of the original. The original was a soap opera, complete with convoluted sub-plots of sub-plots; it took itself seriously, and for the time was pretty entertaining.

This re-boot appears to be a comedy - which might be interesting. Those old episodes may well appear to be comedic in today's context (I haven't watched one of the old episodes to see if it holds up, as I fear I may be disappointed with it now).

Remember people's reaction to The Wild, Wild West? A somewhat comedic re-boot of a venerated classic - and everyone hated it (although I still like it!). Any time there's a re-boot, there will be polarized views. I'll reserve judgment until I've seen it. :)

I watched the trailer; it looks like Dark Shadows in a funhouse mirror - but it *does* look interesting!

Wild Wild West was fun enough. Here's to hoping this will be too!

I like Depp & Burton but will pass on this one, doesn't look good. :thumbsdown

Never liked the originals much, nor the remake in 91 (didn't see the remake in 03 or 04)

I had no idea they were going with the comedic route. So it's kind of like The Brady Bunch Movie. Hmmmm... interesting.

Actually, there was already a reboot of this done in the '90s. I think it lasted a season. I actually enjoyed it. It definitely wasn't a comedy though. I also remember watching some of the originals as a kid in re-runs (my mother was a fan). Once again... not a comedy.

    I'm kind of interested though.

I don't think it looks terrible, but it's definitely not Dark Shadows. The original was not a comedy. It just makes me wonder why they even used the same title. It seems like it would stand on it's own as a completely separate movie. Just like 21 Jump Street. The new movie coming out with Jonah Hill is a comedy, unlike the original tv show, and has nothing to do with the original series. In both cases these films might be good, but have big enough stars in them to not have to rely on the name recognition of older franchises.

Standard fish out of water hijinks and one-liners -- pass. I was actually hopeful for this one too.

But the plot appears essentially the same... except comedic... and set a year after the original series ended... Okay, so it's not exactly the same.

More like "We can bring more people into the theater if we use a title people may recognize".

Just think: "Star Wars: A New Hope" (the musical comedy).:facepalm

I figure there is name recognition in the title, but I would think that star names like Johnny Depp or Jonah Hill would have the same effect.

Hollywood can't help but ruin everything.... they can't come up with an original idea. Thus all the remakes, reboots and sequels.

Didn't know it was going to take a comedic turn.....
And always the highly creative--NOT, cheap sex jokes!?!?

Depp in indelibly Jack in my mind....can't shake 'im!!!
My brain defies what my eyes see!!
All I hear is Jack-- and all I see is a more modern nearly zombie looking Jack Sparrow with a hair cut. :lol

WOW, that looks absolutely terrible. I was also not expecting a full on wink/nudge comedy. I figured there might be some humor, a little camp, but not * jokes. This is a pass for me.

Wow, had no idea they were going that way.

But sometimes the comedy patch is the only way to make a movie version work.

The ones that try to be serious always seem to suck. But the Starsky and Hutch, Dukes and Brady Bunch all were hilarious because didn't get too serious. I'd also add that the Brady Bunch is not only just funny but brilliant.

I watched the original show back in the day, all the remakes.

I'll give it a shot. Just wasn't expecting jokes. I really was hoping for a really spooky performance by Depp. Maybe next time.

Mark Kermode quoted a movie-exec who said that the name/brand recognition of remakes "cut through the clutter" of new material. So in other words, remakes are now the default position, original material is risky.

What is this clutter of new material you're talking about? If anything, it's a clutter of ****ing remakes.

I was excited when I first heard that Burton was doing Dark Shadows. So much so that I started to watch the original TV show. I even remember seeing the reboot when it came out in the 90's. With so much story in it, how could they go wrong?

As a fan of most of Burton's films, I have to say that this trailer looks awful. Very disappointed that they didn't take a more serious route for this film. What Burton has done is basically made a "Not another teenage movie" movie, with vampires. Fish out of water jokes I find to be rather cliche and this trailer was chalk full of them :facepalm. I'll pass on this one

Well im going to be in the minority. I never got into nor was interested in the original or the reboot. I didnt even want to watch the trailer because I had zero interest in a soap opera.

But I watched it and was quite surprised that it was going to be part comedy. It got me into wanting to see it now.

Im sure this movie will be split down the middle. Fans of the original prolly arent gonna like it, but people like me prolly will.

Here's the weird part about all of this.

I'm betting that folks like you are precisely who the producers are counting on. Which, in turn, begs the question of why they'd want to go with a branded property in the first place, right?

I mean, if the theory is "We want a brand name so that people will feel comfortable spending their money on it and want to look at it," then why would you change the story/tone/style so much that it's functionally a different thing altogether, and to the point where the original fanbase is so irked that they won't go see it?

There must be some study out there that shows that people with zero knowledge of the original material are MORE inclined to see something that already existed -- ESPECIALLY if they never watched the original. Like, merely knowing "This is not new or unknown" is enough to get people to show up and THAT'S why we keep seeing branded properties that have so little to do with the underlying material and where the producers are so disdainful of the hardcore fans.

While I was hoping that Burton was going to go fullout gothic horror like Hammer I admit that the trailer looks rather amusing. It may be good for a laugh.

    Prolly = Probably.

I just read somewhere that Depp bought the rights to Dark Shadows, hence why he is in it. Still look stupid though.

    It is....

Everybody uses prolly, or did back in the day of AIM and stuff....
It is a naturally occurring error spelling of probably when you're
speed typing through IMs and it became common slang when IMing
    or chatting IIRC......

.....and to stay on topic--Really, Depp bought his way into Dark Shadows? Must be nice to be so rich!!

I know its pretty much a 180 from the original TV show, but this version still looks interesting to me. There were some laughs in the trailer and I love Depp/Burton, so I'll see it. Kind of reminds me of how when the first trailer for POTC came out. Most people thought it was going to stink.

When is the last time Burton made a worthwhile movie? Alice in Wonderland was heinous. I couldn't get through more than fifteen minutes of that killer-barber musical...thing.

Seriously...right??! And how 'bout that bizarre movie where Depp has those weird knives on his hands! :rolleyes

As for this "Dark Shadows" movie, it looks absolutely dreadful. An absurd and unfunny send-up.

I remember being scared to death by Barnabus Collins when I was a kid. You couldn't get me to watch this Burton bastardization unless you strapped me in a chair and held my eyelids open like Alex in A Clockwork Orange.

I was five years old when the original Dark Shadows first aired in 1966. The only thing I knew about it was that it was a soap opera, so I never watched it; it was only after it had been cancelled that I learned of it's gothic and horror elements. In the years since, I've seen a few scenes from the series and I've seen House of Dark Shadows a couple of times. So I have a basic understanding of the premise and the characters, but couldn't call myself a fan.

That said, I'm hoping this first trailer isn't truly representative of the movie, and that (for whatever reason) they've chosen to showcase some of the humorous scenes in an otherwise more serious movie that'll be closer in mood to Sleepy Hollow than Beetlejuice.

i am a big fan of the original show found it on netflix and have been watching it ever since. the way i think of this is its a parody of the first horror soap opera, its meant to entertain and revamp (pun intended) and old show most of my generation has never heard of, in summary i will go see it and i may even like it.

Question: has anyone noticed all of the remakes of old tv shows and movies?

Yeah, I didn't care for AiW either. The one before that, Sweeney Todd, I thought was pretty good, though. The Depp/Burton track record is a pretty good one, I think. I'm willing to take a chance on this film based on that alone.

Which is actually the business model Hollywood used prior to the "branded properties" approach where who you cast was what sold the tickets, rather than what the property was called.

I mean, they could've stuck Johnny Depp in the film and called it Vampire Shenanigans if that was the business model now, but instead, they're lifting the IP (partially) from existing material.
