Daft Punk - Guy Manuel Tron / R.A.M. Build

I've owned Volpin's blueprints for a long time now. And I highly recommend them to anyone who is curious about the helmets, but you can never have enough reference material.

...I'm sure Sorenzo would agree. ;)

-Nick

Volpin's blueprints are a great starting point for sure. In truth though, I've been working on these sculpts for over 2 years now, the amount of subtle changes I have made to each one in that time has been unbelievable. And there are still dozens more I could make, but you need to draw the line somewhere.

We still don't have a whole lot of reference material to go off of, but to me the chin still looks pretty pronounced. At the very least, it seems to be the same exact style helmet worn at the Tron Legacy premiere. A lot of the details in these photos are being hidden by the chrome finish reflecting the white backdrop.

A while ago a man "on the inside" assured me that Thomas' helmet was a brand new sculpt as well, but the differences are obviously harder to spot than Guy-Man's.

Also, sorry for derailing your thread Sorenzo!

I'm in agreement with RayBans here. The current sculpts looks pretty identical to the Tron Première version.
The Guy-Man lid had obvious design changes for the Tron sculpt, but the Thomas was pretty similar. As mentioned earlier, the only apparent changes has been the ear pucks. There is always disagreements about the GM chin, but I'm leaving mine as it is, that way, if somebody wants to round it off, they can easily do it with some simple sanding.

I do love the obsessions with the finer details of these Helmets, but I think I can safely say I am more than happy with all my sculpts. Of course I'm always on the look out for more reference pictures, i have made changes in the past having discovered new pictures (mostly thanks to Agent Raybans), fingers crossed I wont' need to do it again.

There is always disagreements about the GM chin, but I'm leaving mine as it is. . . .

Ok, crumbled. I modded the chin, made it rounder.

I also added a nice base to the sculpt, to give more of a defined opening for the cast. Lessons learned from previous molds.

I just looked back at my first attempt of this mold. No wonder it turned out rubbish :/ but you learn from mistakes.

Here is V.2. Much better in my opinion.

Prepped and ready to go. The master had a liberal coating of mold release.

First layer of silicone is thinned down, to capture the detail. I used a disposible brush to dimple into all the recesses to ensure there were no air bubbles trapped. I allowed this layer to dry, then applied another couple of layers at normal viscosity.

I've mentioned this trick before, but I will mention it again, as it is an amazing money saver. Silicone is very expensive, but when a mold is kaput it can be used as filler for other molds, reducing the amount of fresh silicone you need to use. For the bush on stuff I chop it up with a herb slicer and mix it up with fresh silicone, about 60 fresh, 40 chopped and apply it. This is a great way of packing a mold. it doesn't look pretty, but it works. a final layer of thickened silicone will reduce the harsh texture.

Paper template for the outer frame, best to test the theory before cutting. Here you can see the recycle silicone.

A spot of trimming around the opening, and applied the reg keys, using thickened silicone to hold them in place.

Frame pieces cut from hardboard and fixed together with bolts and wingnuts, for easy open/close, and the Plasti-Paste outer applied.

Once set, the outer is removed and the master is released from the mold.

The mold looks great, no air pockets or weak spots. ready for casting.

First pull is a complete success. extremely happy with the results, my best mold to date.

amazing work! Can't wait to see it in person and start working on it when Im back from italy :)

That looks amazing. What's happening visor-wise? Are you going to VAC form a clear one or is it remaining a non wearable show piece for now?

What resin are you casting with?

The one pictured above it Smooth Cast Onyx, but I also work with 65D.

The visor has already been made for V1, The same visor fits this sculpt.
I have a buck for vac-forming, transparent pet-g.

Sorry friend, not sure how I can help you. Everything used was/is readily available under various brand names, which will differ depending where you live. You'll need to do your own research to see what is available in your area.

NECKLACES!

Had to make a set. They look amazing in the 'Get Lucky' video.

Simple little build.

Equilateral triangle base, spent a bit of time tricking around with the height of the pyramid.
Then created the details with styrene.

A quick tidying job on the disk sander, prime and sand to mirror finish with 1200 grit, and they are packed off to the chrome guys. This will be a great way to test the quaility of the chrome finish.

back from the chrome guys, time for the final finish.

9084090362_1abf3b87eb_z.jpg

I masked off the recessed areas. The paint won't bite the chrome, so I gave them all a light sandblast quicker and more accurate than hand sanding.

They were then all painted and clear coated, results are more than impressive, very happy.

I then attached a matching bail finding for the chain to run through.

And that is them complete. The chains are in the mail, so looking forward to recieving them to complete the piece.
