Happy Hally'een! hope you all had a good one, i'm looking forward to seeing all the wonderful costumes you created

Was really quite upset i wasn't further along with my build so i could properly rock the Daft Punk costume, but i wasn't going to let anything stop me.

My biggest problem was not having a visor, ergo not being able to see. I came up with a neat idea which not only let me see out of the lid, but also stayed true to my belief that halloween costumes should be creepy and scary!

Not going to do much typing for this one, the pics speak for themselves.

This pic really makes me smile, cause i can now see how potentially beauitful this lid will be when complete

So this is after some very very very quick weathering effect painting, think i had like 90mins to get it done before i went out for the night!

And here's me wearing it it looked much better in the dark, i had red LED's inside which glowed out the bullet holes and made my fave inside look creepy as hell.
I was also suppose to shred up the tux, weather it, cover it in blood, but tots ran out of time.

I've had a very busy and stressfull couple of weeks, but finally today i had a major victory!!

GUY-MANUEL TRON HELMET NOW HAS A VISOR!!!!!

Took a while though. I learned alot about resin, fibreglass, plaster, styrene, acrylic, PET-G, vac formers and patience, most of it however was learned the hard way.

I realised that the off-cut from the visor cast would be pretty useless, 1, because of the bubble left from the silicone reg keys (mentioned this in an earlier post) and 2 because the urethane wouldn't be able to take the heat under the vac former.

I needed to cast another mould from the master. Played with the idea of using silicone and plastipaste again, but settled with the cheaper option of resin and glass fibre, messy but cheap.

I bought PVA release, which in theory would have been the best option. It is basically pva with alochol, once applied the alcohol evaporates leaving a fine layer of pva. the resin is placed on top and once dry, water can be poured into the mould, dissolving the pva and releasing the mould. sadly the pva release wouldn't take to the master due to the layers of wax already applied.

Resin and fibre goes on easy, but decided to eat up the primer underneath, not the end of the world, but goes to show what happens if you use cheap paints.
(although i don't need to now, i can defo see myself spending a few days repainting, sanding and buffing it back to perfection)

Fibreglassed mould pops off with out a problem, shuttered of the ends and filled with casting plaster.

24hrs later the plaster is dry and ready for vacforming.

I had so many problem when it came to the vacforming, which was frustrating, but also taught me alot.

In the end, my vacformer wasn't up to the task of heating the material sufficently so i could get a decent form. So i ended up outsourcing. Took a bit of time but the result was fantastic.

The visor is formed with 2mm PET-G, the visablity is surprisinly good, the only other option would have been acrylic, but there is no flexability onced formed and a high risk of cracking.
There are some imperfections, but these are only visible on the inside, the outer side is perfect, so once its tinted/backsprayed it will look awesome

Had a quick trim and sand and am glad to say it fits extremely well. because this visor is set from the inside it will probably be a tad tricky to set, but what hasn't been tricky with these builds.

I'll get some decent pics up tomorrow when the light is good, but this is looking **** hot, if i do say so myself.

Well after all that hard work you definately deserve an easier time on your other guy man build. So do you plan to dye or spray your visor?

Will probably try both to be honest. I'll be making 2 versions, 1 with lights, so I want to see which works best.

I think I can help you get rid of that last bit of visor distortion.

When I was vac forming my Guy visor, I was having the same imperfection problems that I can see on yours. I searched online for days and found several tips on how to get better clear pulls. Perfectly clear, no warp or distortion, and completely reproducible. Awww yeah :cool

I found the solution on a model car building forum, for use on vac forming the tiny windscreens. Vacuum form 1/32" polystyrene over the buck, but don't peel it off! Give it an even 400 grit sanding and cut the extra material away, but leave the polystyrene on the buck (preferably without getting air between the buck and polystyrene). Then do your PETG pull as normal. The polystyrene won't have water in it to boil out when you put the hot PETG down on it and the somewhat rough sanding helps air flow out evenly, but doesn't affect the clarity of the results.

Oh, and I love your Halloween solution! I was trying to think of a way to "creep out" my helmet for ZombieCon next year. Do you mind if I steal it? (the idea)

Cheers for the advice Lucky7, i had already thought of that and tried it, but unfortunalty the style of vacum former that i've been using has the heat plates directly above the buck, so a layer of styrene would be heated, bubble and melt

Will have a look and see about accessing a different machine, where there is no heat being applied to the buck, but for now i'm more than happy with the results.

This Guy has been gathering dust for a while now. New album is out soon, would there be any interest in me molding him up again. Last mold wasn't the best, but the lessons learned made my classic Guy-Man mold pretty darn good.
