D-Projects: Forbidden Planet BC Build

Hi All - Del here with another project on the table. This time around, a buddy has asked for a BlasterCore to be installed in a Forbidden Planet blaster.

So here we go...

Not sure who originally built the prop but it's pretty nice. There is plenty of room inside for all the electronics.

Here, I am working on the BlasterCore chassis. I'm like for the entire electronics pack to be removable all at once. In this case, the electronics will be attached to the blaster cone. This is just a rough construct to see how it all fits.

Once everything is fitted. I'll start working on the sound files for the BC.

More Pics to follow as progress continues... :love

Didn't like the way the BC chassis was turning out so I trashed that idea and started from scratch. Now it fits snugly in the blaster. I switched to 18650 Sanyo cells as well.

That sure look like on of my older versions, with a flosted tip as I could not find a shop to polish them.

I put a metal tupe in the mold and with some was able to pull it out, later I just left the tube in and cut the ends off.

This was a light only version as it has no openings in the rear cap for the sound to get out.

I might be able to spare a cap adn start if you want them.

Hi Rich, I'm not sure who made this one. Did you embed the trigger switch into the resin? There was no metal tubing inside this one. I plan to router a socket in the endcap for the speaker with some very small sound holes drilled perfectly in the cap to allow the sound out. The customer was more LEDs so I'm looking for some really small ones that will fit the build.

No, I had one of those from RAC props, and I noticed that the side flanges were not that thick, I had to thicken mine up, to keep them from breaking off. I later got one at a convention that looks just like yours, but the back end had a screw on it, so it could be screwed in, and unscrewed, which I really loved, to replace the battery and get to the electronics. And it had thick flanges on the side, like the one you show here. I will have to pull them out of storage, so I can show you the difference.
Thanx for sharing that photo, takes me back.

Had a small criticality accident with the last power source that forced a re-design. New chassis built with non-conductive materials.. Ooooppsss

Sadly as the mold was used the side fin got thinner.

IF I had time and over 10 orders I would redo the whole model, using metal for the fins and rear cap.

There was two ways I did that, the early model had a side cover in the handle that was glued on and then the seams filled, I think I can see the fill on that model.

The later models I had a lower 1/2 of the handle that is fitted into the upper section and captures the trigger and micro lever switch and then the seam is filled before painting.

Update

This is the new Blaster Core chassis. It's non-conductive this time. So no battery meltdowns. I've added blaster charge level LEDs. They are only view-able with the end cap removed. I would make them view-able externally but I hate drilling on a hard to replace prop.

The recharge/kill port is visible here.

WOW! Just saw your test of the blaster. That flash and sound effect would be enough to chase the Id monster away.

This looks great and very bright. This is one of my favorite prop designs.

Are there any measured plans or drawings for this from the original? The original from profiles in history was beautiful.

I have a cast version of this that is really really rough (the barrel and christmas tree is out of round, and almost egg shaped) so I would eventually like to get a decent version. Mine looks ok as a display as long as you don't get to close :unsure
