Custom Doctor Octopus WIP - pic heavy - finished

So I'm attempting to build Doctor Octopus tentacles within two months.. I'm doing a customized Doc Ock for my sister for Wondercon in two months. Just started this two days ago and I'm building as fast as I can. Finally someone will be something that complements my Spidey armor!

For the tentacles, I'm basing it loosely on the Raimi version:

I'm making the individual braces out of foam as well as the claws. I'll be putting lights in, but no mechanics. Also, I'm not doing nearly as many braces as there are on the Raimi version.
I picked up some 3/4" inner diameter pipe insulation foam and ordered some 1/4" wire conduit for the tube parts. I got garden posts, or stakes, the green ones, for the structure... They've got a piece of metal running through them, they don't bend cleanly, but with the foam over it it works. I'm mounting the whole thing to a rubber made lid in a backpack (pretty, no? effective, I hope so) It'll be covered by a coat so the mounting isn't important as long as it holds and is light weight.

Anywho, here's some progress picks so far.

And here's one with some pipe insulation on it:

Put some of the braces on to see how it'll look. I'm diggin it. Only 24 more braces to build and conduit arrives tommorrow.. I may actually finish this in a couple weeks.

Getting there:

So traced the rest of the brace stencils last night:

cut, cut cut and more cut... This was my life for about an hour:

44 braces cut.. Still need to sand the edges, and cut out most of the center holes... But this morning, my wire conduit came:

So, I roughly threw one of the arms together, and I think it looks pretty cool... Of course, there's no paint on it. But here we are so far:

more to come soon

Thanks for the vid! I watched this this morning, and man, those tentacles must've cost a fortune haha. Solid auminum rod through them and all that fanciness... Mine will not disassemble as easy as hers... and I'm keeping the budget below $50... So far, at $33

I would not expect you to use expensive materials :D I thought the construction method would come in handy though

Got paint on one of the arms... Plastidip on the pipe insulation and a mix of metallic silver and black primer on the "vertebrae" and claw:

Put them together:

and stuck in the lights and wire conduit:

Heres the mask I made to go with it. It's not necessarily from anything, just inspired by various doc ock versions out there.

Got one of the tentacles completed and installed on the backpack assembly:

and here's some close ups of some of the foam hardware:

Re: Customized Lady Doctor Octopus WIP - pic heavy

All of the claws are finished, just plug and play (so to speak) at this point:

14 vertebrae to finish, just sanding and hardware... then paint everything left, construct, wire and attach and the tentacles are done... so close

then I just have to take in the trench coat and I'm done... Maybe next week?

Re: Customized Lady Doctor Octopus WIP - pic heavy

All pieces are cut and ready to paint... Painting today, then I can assemble.

Finished the trench coat yesterday too... Had to make some adjustments so it fits my sister better. And I sewed a hood into it.
Nearly done.
