cross on army officer hat?

In Live Die Repeat, Tom cruise has a black cross on his cover. Is this a sign of a coward? Pretending to be "clergy"?

It's it on the top of his cover? If so, that's just the traditional decision, if you will, that goes on the of all USMC officer's covers. It dates back to the earliest days of the Corps and is called a quatrefoil and was so that sharpshooter in the ship's rigging could more easily identify their officers.
