    1. Vader too short
    2. Vader would never be crowded at a bar
    3. Force Choke not aggressive enough
    4. It looks like actor playing Vader swirls his cape with hand, Vader never did that his cape flowed behind him because of how fast he walked or how forceful he was
    5. I might have too much time on my hands

Being an ad it's an abomination in any case, but being an ad with SW in it, it makes me want to punch the screen in.

Tom's work being used = cool. It looks good.

The commercial itself? It just doesn't work well.

I thought the creature work was perfect, it blended seamlessly the past to the present my only criticism is the way Vader was presented, a somewhat dumbed down less malevolent Vader for the masses, but then again thats what the now "retired" Lucas wants

    Tom's work was great.

The concept of the ad was meh. Nice bit with the dog, why tack SW on? And we've seen Vader choke people before, why do they think it's funny.

I have a great idea, let's tack Star Wars on at the end because everyone likes Star Wars! I'm positive we will sell an a@@-load more cars after this.

I took it as a reference to the Vader Kid ad they did last year, you know, the one they referred to IN this ad?
To me, it worked and was funny. I may have my issues with some of the decisions I've seen with the francise (Vader shouting NOOOOO in ROTJ for example) but I thought this was cute.
Of course, I'm also they guy who gets odd looks for having Star Wars and Star Trek items in the same collection so what do I know? :unsure :lol

Exactly! :lol Actually, Art hooked them up with me. I had two evenings after work, three days before Christmas to make eight of those things. Kicked my butt, since they're all "hand rolled". I had some serious bruises down my arm.

Anyway...paid for a good chunk of my Christmas gifts!

The helmet seems a little undersized and the mask perhaps too symmetrical and the lenses seem wrong and check out the gloves, definitely wrong

While I will agree with the general sentiment that this commercial was very poorly written and the Star Wars theme was simply tacked on as an afterthought to get it passed around on the net, I would counter your Vader arguments by saying that I thought the Vader in the commercial was supposed to BE the kid from the last commercial, all grown up, hence the swirling of the cape and the short stature. Now, I could be completely misreading that, but that was my take.

Again, while I thought the commercial as a whole was just terrible, I am pretty darn excited to see that SEVERAL of our member's work was represented in a commercial that will air in one of the most expensive slots on TV! How awesome is that?!?

Ponda Baba is missing his arm. And check out the 'space suit' on the guy on the left.

The second thing I noticed about this shot was that the televisions are on the Superbowl and the lowest banner on the screen says 'Football is Great'.

    1) Not sure what you're basing this on, since he's not standing beside anyone for reference. But I agree, he did not look imposing.

    2) True. But neither would the Superbowl be on TV in Mos Eisley.

    3) On the contrary, I think the Force choke was over-acted. It looks like Vader is trembling slightly, he is so intently concentrating on the choke. The real Darth Vader never looked like he was straining to use the Force.

    4) Yes, Vader swirling his cape with his hand was out of character. This spot could've been staged a heck of a lot better.

    5) We all do. lol

Overall, I think the commercial was weak, and if you'll pardon the pun, forced. It's just not very funny or clever, at all. And it most definitely pales in comparison with last year's instant classic mini-Vader spot.

This is the second time the Cantina has been used/re-created...first, the Nike commercial featuring David Beckham, Snoop, et al., and now this VW spot. And in both instances, besides looking great--Beckham and pals were *seamlessly* inserted into the original Cantina footage, and in this spot Tom Spina's creatures and makeup are fantastic!--the scripts fell flat. Especially the Nike commercial script, which was bereft of anything even remotely clever or interesting.

It's a shame, because America does love Star Wars, and the Cantina is such a rich and fertile ground for parody. The VW spot tried, but in the end, choked.

This thread is a joke, right?

    ...right?

I think "criticizing Star Wars" is becoming the new hip internet meme. Pretty soon Cheezburger Network is going to have a site for it.

    Seriously.

That's true, but the criticism seems to extend to anything and everything even remotely related to the films.

This is a thread founded on how a guy playing Darth Vader on a TV spot flips his cape too much.

    :facepalm

But yes, I did think the ad itself was pretty lame. They are trying too hard...it just turned out weird and uninspired.

The more you know about something, the more critical you can be of attempts to reproduce or represent it.

Kinda like people who've read books are often the most critical of the film adaptations.

And like the trailer for the new movie, "The Artist". Some friends of mine love that trailer, and I'm appalled by it. Why? Because I know my film and music history, and the song "Sing Sing Sing" used in the trailer was not even written until 7 years AFTER the timeframe of the movie. Most people wouldn't know that, like my friends I alluded to, and so they could enjoy the song (which is great), and the trailer.

When I told them the film takes place in the roaring 20s ('27), and Louis Prima didn't write Sing Sing Sing 'til '34. They said I was quibbling over 7 years, but when I reminded them how different America was in pre-Depression 1927 and mid-Depression 1934, and when I likened it to having Elvis tunes in a WWII movie trailer, they understood.

The cape swirl is intentional, it's the same as the little kid did it in last years commercial.

The helmet does not have clear cheeks, the silver paint is very light and very glossy. And his right cheek (our left) is reflecting the illuminated white bar top. Plus new digital cameras are so much sharper and more vivid then the OT shot on film- it really makes a difference in the 'look' of Vader.

Your right. I enjoyed how well the characters/ set pieces were done, my main gripe is how lame the commercial was. Then again, Lucas did make Annie out to be a whiney B*, so who knows. Perhaps Vader was actually portrayed perfectly in the commercial after all.

Small hands on Vader. That and the top of his helmet bugged me, and I'm no Vader expert.

    But a good effort.

If that one guy has his arm missing, shouldn't the other one be dead? Didn't Old Ben take him out?

It seems like the 'usual' Vader costume they use, like back in the Target add from a few years ago. It looks like Vader, just not Vader from the OT movies.

Could be worse, they could be using an EP3 Vader or a Rubies. At least this one looks better then either of those.

    Wow, holy nit-picking!

The Vader helmet is actually officially approved by Lucasfilm for live, promotional appearances. You can't get any more accurate than having the parent company stamp it with their "OK".

It's vacuum-formed plastic and it's the same suit used for the characters at Disney World.

I can assure you, it is full-sized.

As far as the nitpicking goes, how about the background character wearing the cantina band member mask with the neck on the OUTSIDE of the costume!?!

The Tonika Sisters are wearing two different color leotards.
Ponda Bobba's jacket is not orange.

The plumbing is inaccurate behind the bar.

The cantina didn't have flat screen TV's.

There's no giant preying mantis in the background.

Jeez people, get over it! The crew involved did a SPECTACULAR job. Who cares if Vaders helmet is 1/2MM off in height??

That's correct about the Vader... VERY full size! Big guy. Have to say the vac formed mask was beautiful in person. Clever way to cut down weight and looked amazing in person.

I realize you were just picking other nits to have a go at the Vader folks and I don't want to go nit-for-tat (ha!)... but...

The Tonnika sisters' costumes are actually blue and green in the film (just that most stills we've seen were black and white or improperly colorized) and the band head (which is a prequels-used mask supplied by Lucasfilm) was wearing a beige scarf that just LOOKED like the bib untucked :)

Just having fun here though. I agree totally that the folks on set and in production did some great work and I know the costumer tried her best to get the closest she could that time (and budget) allowed. The set was just INCREDIBLE considering how quickly it all came together.

    best,
    Tom

They could not have done it without you, Tom. Absolutely amazing work!

The best shot of the whole spot is when Hammerhead and the two aliens flanking him abruptly resume their conversation after rubbernecking the incident at the bar. CLASSIC! It totally took me back to June of '77 when I saw the original for the first time! :thumbsup :thumbsup

That shot's my fave as well. It's funny, when we set that booth up... I walked by at one point and looked over to my left and felt like I was looking at a production still, except it was live, right there in front of me. Pretty cool feeling!

    "It's just a flesh wound!"

^ That says it all. The commercial itself, well, two commercials combined, didn't really "flow". I only noticed Vader's gloves being "wrong" - and that's 'cause I've been hanging around here too long! :lol. But all in all, the SW work was amazing! :thumbsup
