Crackerjazz' 1/10 Lunar Module LM-5 Eagle Ascent Stage

Hi Shaunsheep - thanks! I'm actually having a bit of trouble trying to simulate the texture of the skin.

The beige sheildings seem plastic sheet-like in the way they fold, while the black ones show paper-like creases. So I'm still experimenting the best way to replicate them.

A 1/48 model would be more forgiving but the 1/10 magnifies everything big-time so real-looking LM skin is paramount.

I imagine, though, that unless the viewer knows why they look that way they won't go past the thought that the builder just can't model properly.
Just look at the shieldings -- they're in a sorry state. If I try to replicate it exactly as it should look -- I'd be the only one who could happily look at it.

I did try to replicate the beige panels using chip bags.

See what I mean? It isn't something I can be proud of.....

Anyway, for now I'll be practicing on a Vincent Meens 1/32 to see if I can get the texture of the shieldings too look right.

Smoothened up the facets again and experimenting on the black panels.

Yeah, I think that you got it right with that last pic. Easier to apply paper or chip packaging on already existing flat surfaces. Last time I did was with regular paper; you soak it with a mix of water and white glue and then apply it to the flat surface by working it and make the necessary ply and depression. Let it dry and voilà.
Keep up the great work!!

Stunning work crackerjack ...
one thing that impresses me is the fine detail and how do you keep the styrene strips aligned and glue the surface detail on this piece, I am finding it hard to work cleanly at smaller scales

I think you've nailed it with the textures on the softer surfaces. Far from looking like inferior modelling skills, it gives the model the scale and realism it needs. It's the same principle with model glass and steel buildings or steel ships. There are ripples, bulges, and imperfections that are very hard to replicate on a small scale, but without them, the result looks like a model.

Your build is stunning. I suspect when you're done you'll be able to fool people into thinking your photographs are of the real deal. Keep up the great work and thanks for all the documentation!

Skin on the LM was for thermal shielding, possibly as a debris shield but not structural. Right?

R/ Robert

Hi vfxfreak, thanks! shaunsheep, scoob, HH, thanks for following -- haven't touched the LM in a while : ( The force is too strong it's pulling me away from it. Hi Robert, that's right -- it's not structural. The outer skin was for micrometeoroid shielding and there was a separate inner thermal skin.

Amazing build! I visited The Cradle Of Aviation Museum two weeks ago. There is a lunar module from the cancelled Apollo-18 mission on display there. Having seen the real thing I can say you have captured every detail with amazing accuracy. I can't wat to see more!
