hello all
so I've only watched about half of episode 1 so not sure on how i think the show is going to go so far but i spotted a cool little prop that would make for a good build... i imagine if not already it won't be long before someone is on the case with a 3d model or a build and hopefully there will be some better shots of other angles of the prop but i think it could be a neat little project and i might jump aboard and have a crack at it....

i should continue to watch the show and look for more shots of the prop but i couldn't resist starting to model it.. it will need tweaks for sure, i am purely basing this off the rough scale of his hand for now, can't quite tell the depth as yet but i guess i have to start somewhere...........
it would be relatively simple to scratch build by the looks of the basic forms.

Hey, yes that prop is very cool and there are lot of references in the series!
you'll see a lot of other cool props and cool nods to Star Wars, Blade Runner and Alien in the series! I'm loving the props in it!

i feel like a bit of an idiot, turns out they are phones! after episode 2 i now know that there are a few versions of the prop and the one i started is Spike Speigel's, but i think i prefer the one Jet Black has..... maybe i will just make them both.

the chair in the doctors office is really cool and yes there are plenty of props that could make for fun projects.... the show is pretty fun too..

here's some more shots - haven't found any of the back yet and still a lot of details to figure out as its almost always been held in someones hand
there is some of jet blacks phone here too and i definitely think it has some more fun details but i will definitetly continue to model them both and see how close i can get to them being accurate.

Here is a very early first render... its a way off being accurate and the back is just nothing at the moment - even from shot to shot of Spike Speigels phone there seems to be differences and of course the corners are all too square - usually this would be easily solved but for some reason (i use Cinema 4d for modelling) the subdivision surface generator tool is really misbehaving on this one and i think that is down to it having no thickness currently. onwards we go, im having fun doing this so its all good.

I am so glad you are making a model of this due to I have been looking for the model since it came out, no place had this. I was going to upload more SS's .. even funnier when you have the same ones I do, like down the same angle...although the back...which only 1 angle I found was when Faye dropped it on the grass...I know not the best quality and pardon the red line couldn't pause it right and get good enough angles, but gives you a general idea, But there is another top n side as well. I hope this helps. Cause I would really like to resin print this SO much.

nice, those are some great angles i didn't get, what episode was the one where Faye drops the phone?
i have alot more work to do before this becomes 3d printable.... the mesh is behaving horribly and i have issues to fix and . but what i will be doing is finalising the details then re- modelling as a functional part i.e. it will be in 2 halves that fix together so electronics can be put inside like an EL panel.

Shoot forgot the ep, but it is where she was on her own with the spore grenade that turns people into trees in the beginning, where she is trying to get her identkit from the guy who unfroze her. Sorry forgot what the name of that ep was. But you will know from the start.
Sadly that dropped phone part isnt until closer to the end of the ep too, i was shocked myself when i saw the back of it.

OOOh and sweet, i was hoping for 2 parts, for electronics. I did notice there were at least 3 different phones in the season used by different people. Jax's, Spikes, and Faye's.
Funny enough I have a screen big enough for the phone... touch screen as well, I honestly hope it fits it seems roughly the size, problem is the minor electronics to run it alone with some touch capability...that is gonna be a weird one to think of once you complete it to get the sizes over all inside.

I love it... thank you SO MUCH for doing this cause I really did want this as soon as i saw it.

ahh sweet yeh i know the episode... i will keep working on it once i get the basics i am defo going to do jet blacks phone too, i love the extra details and colours on his.

I agree, thankfully i have the orange color one of my fav colors for objects really, so it should be easy to paint as well.

keep up the good work, and I hope you don't pull out your hair too much :)

i think it would be easier if i knew fusion 360 as cinema 4d is notably not 3d printings best friend, i have some tutorial videos for fusion 360 but ive used C4D for so long its just easier for me..... except for being a little rusty... i thought "oh this looks like a pretty simple shape"

LOL Well you are already ahead of me, I cant wrap my head around C4D, or F360, Blender, Maya....my brain isnt wired for it....I can prob rip it apart(code wise) and put it back together better than it was before.... but using it over all, I am a no go...I have tried multiple times. I envy you period.
I can only go off of what others have mentioned, supposedly, you can do stuff in C4D and import it to f360 and do the final stuff there, that is what I heard anyways, a lot of people use C4D to make the object, and the final 'calculations' they have said happens in f360 cause it is made for 3d printing, idk if that is true, but multiple people from different sources have said this, you may want to look into that.

I was in the props department, I not only got to see these being made, but I will say this, if you plan on using some form of plastic, that's not how they were made for the show, I got to see them being painted, cause I was learning tricks of how they do it to sell realism, they also have no electronics in them, they are just a prop with the images and whatnot, put in with CGI

thats cool man, i bet it was a blast working on the show.... if you have any good photos of them that you might be allowed to share that would be epic, but i totally get it if you can't.

It was quite fun, I didn't get to do much though, since they didn't understand my skill set, I was looking forward to them teaching me how to do realistic paint work, etc, which I did get to see bits of, which was great, I couldn't take pictures of the actual prop ones, sadly, I got to see the blueprints for the majority of stuff, it was really great to see what they did for the Casino scene, I have a few pieces from that, including a receipt and a couple chips, also a few card fragments which my dad took directly off the set, they also didn't do 3D printing for these either ;)

ahh so elusive, well whatever methods they used, one way or another i will try to make something that looks like the ones in the show but i have alot of work before i get there.
