Costuming for tourists; Hollywood blvd, Times Square, Las Vegas...

I am in NY and LA a lot and see a lot of costumed street vendors. Las Vegas as well.
It is usually a bad knock off of a muppet or disney costume with a homeless guy inside.
They usually have some shady handler that wants $5 for the picture you just took.

Has anyone done this for laughs or money? Put on your "A-Game" costume and posed with the family from Iowa?
It is like a concert violinist playing in the subway, not for the tips, just to be able to play for an audience.
