Costume Project: Captain Typho Pilot

Hey everyone,

I am starting to look into doing a Captain Typho Naboo Pilot costume, not typhos completely, but Padme and the third nameless pilot share the same details anyway so thats good enough for me.

I think I have the fabric neck, shirt and pants taken care of, but some of the others I need some help with identifing or getting my hands on them.

The Helmet, is the Rubies good to modify? Has anyone done this?

The bracers, again has anyone done this, or have ideas how to make these?

The spats on the boots, same questions, any ideas?

The vest I will probably get someone to make from pleather or leather, I haven't a preference aside from cost.

Does anyone know anyone that has done the Padme or Typho varient that can help me on this?

Any help would be awesome.

Yes, I did the costume, for me and the missus, two years ago for her alone, and last year for myself. I still have to work on both costumes, i.e. making adjustments and exchanging pieces to improve the overall quality. But hey, that´s the hobby, isn´t it ? ;) Work´s never done.

First thing, locate the correct pleather, or even better, get a leather that has been dyed . The pleather vest is kind of hot, especially when wearing a turtleneck sweater. The ribbing on the outside is kind of easy for a pro seamstress (or leather craftsman like our own DavidYR1), but can drive you nuts when you don´t do that for a living. I took some plastic tubing and used it as a guide. I sewed the tubing into the vest, so the ribs held their volume.

The colours for the cloth parts are still off, I find ot pretty hard to get ready made clothing in both the rigth material and colour.

The bracers were done in a hurry, but I plan (aw man, I can hear a certain member laugh out loud...) to make a sculpt and the do a proper fibre glass cast.

I made them out of sintra. First I built a pattern out of carton, approximating the curvature as good as I could. I then flattened the pattern, so I could cut it out of sintra. With a heat gun and a lot of patience I "massaged" the sintra into form. I then glued strips of sintra onto the bracer shell. On top of those strips I glued the outer "hull" of thick electrical cable, so I´d get a constant rounded shape for the thicker ridges. The thinner ridges also are electrical wire, but due to the smaller diameter those were directly glued to the bracer shell.

I had made boot spats, but at the time the photos were taken, my Naboo guard costume had to go into a display, and already looked funny enough without the boots, so I decided to leave them off. But you might notice that both the Naboo pilots and the Naboo palace guard/Naboo royal guard share the same boot spats and shin guards. Also, the Captain Typho Senate outfit (the blue one) has those boot spats.

The most important thing is the helmet. You can use a Rubies, but modification might be a bit complex, although I have seen a young lady pull that off with a paintball mask attached to a rubies.

I got myself one of the Godzilla helmets, and i must say that they are absolutely spot on and of remarkable quality. Even Captain Typho himself, Jay Lagaaia, owns one of those helmets. Since he was so impressed when he saw my own helmet two years ago, he wanted one for himself.

Good luck with the project . I am currently extremely busy, and if this hadn´t been about my personal faves, I wouldn´t have answered, so if you have a question, feel free to ask, I can´t guarantee a speedy reply, though :\

PM sent.

But I also wanted to post how GREAT your costumes look. I have only seen one really good one before yours and wow. Aside from the colours of your sleaves the costumes look spot on and any information and tips I can get from you will be great.

And if you need to get rid of any parts let me know ;)

This thread's been dead for a while, but with CIV coming up, I've decided to breathe some life into it since my wife needs a costume (Padme Pilot).

Been in touch with ManFromNaboo and he's been very helpful.

I was lucky enough to get a Godzilla Naboo helmet so we're all set there (although vision is kind of blurry through the tinted lens).

I just finished a rough sculpt of Padme Pilot's belt buckle based upon a scaled-up printout. I believe it's a 1.5" belt, so I'm estimating the buckle at about 6.5" in width. This sculpt is so crude, I'm practically embarrassed to post it, but it's passable from a few feet away so I might end up using it anyway---and it shows what you can do with some Sculpey and a few hours time:

Next up is placing it on a slightly convex base then baking it solid. Then comes the priming and painting in gold. I think it will be much better-looking at that point. If I've got time, I'll do a better sculpt.

If anyone (Primrodo?) is still working on this costume, I'd love to collaborate some more to get this done in the next 15 weeks...CIV is coming fast.

Thats great that you got a Godzilla helmet. I PM'd here on the forum and never heard back....

I am basically stuck at the point of getting the vest made and a Rubies helmet modified.

Great sculpt though. Great attention to detail.

Ten years. Wow.

And now I think I made a small discovery regarding the boots and covers.

The boots and "bootspats" we were talking about and searching for seem to be at least based on an australian boot style called "shearers boots".

Since it´s been more than fifteen years that the Naboo costumes have been made its not easy or nearly impossible to find the accurate boot in an online store.

This is the closest that I could find Emu-Australia.jpg it´s a women´s boot, but I am sure that there are other makers than EMU out there. One other that I found is Rossi boots. http://www.rossiboots.com.au/catalogue/detail/666-shearers-boot/shearing

They all share the low profile sole, while the actual boots used with the costumes have a higher profile sole.

Anyway, it´s kind of satisfying to at least know the general direction of what those boots may have been. Since the EP1-3 supporting character costumes are not as popular as those of the main characters its nice to make a small find regarding information ;)

AND !!! I would not have made that discovery if not for sahrchitect ´s post in this thread http://www.therpf.com/showthread.php?t=259118&page=2 ;)
