Cooper RBR.

Hey guys.

Finally got the basecoat on this build. Went for flat white and im yet to take some fine steel wool to scuff her up a little and smooth the paint out before i get to markings and weathering. The 9v is situated in the cockpit as i had to make a custom stand with a rod through the docking port area (the supplied stand is a bit weak) Engines are lit with orange as it seemed the right choice. Gonna try get her as close to the prop as i can instead of a model style paint job, so ill be using salt masking, oil washes and pastels. Now just gotta order that display case :cry

Lee... looking GREAT. Looks like you did a phenomenal job of cleaning up the piping on the engines. Mine were very very blobby. Maybe I didn't get as good of a cast. Looks like one of the crispest Cooper RBR's I've seen.

As for the orange lighting... I vaguely remember white or white with a blue trim for the coloring on the engine lights... correct me if I'm wrong.

How did you make the stand... looks great.

Thanks buddy, the casting was ok, i did have to do a fair amount of putty work etc, but overall i think i got one of the better casts going by some of the stories i hear. I went for orange as i have pics of the prop with that color bulb running, well that said it comes up yellow in some pics, white didnt look right to me.
The stand is just an alloy kitchen shelf drilled and an M10 threaded bar bolted in, i used one of my old RC racing trophies for the support shroud then sprayed it all gloss black. I had to put an insert inside for the rod and bolt to locate, but the result is very solid and looks more prop based than the supplied stands.
Should be fun to paint and weather.

Wow bro you took one of your trophies lol

Anyway bro the stand looks very nice .

The lightning looks right to me. I hope you can start the paintjob soon, and if you use the same technics you used on the Y, your RBR will rock . :D

Thanks for sharing bro =)

Julien it was a crappy circuit i recieved the trophy anyways :lol Thanks bro, i hope i can pull something nice off. Imaginager, thanks, i wanted the mount to be "anonymous" i think is the word lol. The original mounts were incorporated into the model and ruined its look. OK opinions, im thinking of misting some SP lettering grey over the hull very lightly to tone down the white, or do i use weathering techniques to achieve that? What do you guys think? :confused

Nice work putting that one togther Lee. I'm with Julien, the work you've done before and how you handled the Y, this should be quite the work of art when your done.

That runner is lookin mighty fine, nice job. I agree, the stand is elegantly understated.

Is this a resin model or a scratch build? Sorry to sound dim, but who is Cooper? Are they a good kit maker?

Love to see some more pix when you get'em

thanks

It is indeed a garage kit boodha, this "consular ship" is mastered by Randy Cooper, you can find more info over at starshipmodeler.com. Just message user anubispro and he'll fill you in. ;)

Lee that looks great. mine is in the same stage, its white and i need a new type of stand, and then I need to do some of the weathering, Im not gouing to do an exact replica, i would love to be able to do an episode 6 version but there isnt enough pics for that, I need to figure what kind of guns were made and better pics of the windows and what kind of radar on the bottom.

Thanks people, long way to go and a lot of masking/ weathering, there are so many conflicting ref shots, im ignoring the ROTJ pics but even a lot of ANH version pics differ in tone and contrast, the original was reworked for ROTJ along with a new model, am i right on this, the red tones seem to differ even on ANH model pics i have, im so confuzzled lol. Ive started with the red markings on the bridge, just finished them as it goes, dont look too bad.
Ill get some pics up maybe sunday when there is a good load of work done and leave you guys to bring the rotten fruit and vegetables to throw at me :p
Oh BTW anyone else see the ship is painted topically or is it just me? If so, ive never tried this method, but eager to have a go, so any tips would go down a hoot lol.

bests.....lee

Hey Lee, I too am on the same level as you right now and will post pics on SSB and other places too,
All of my red paint is on and i too ignored the ROTJ version, because it has toomuch orange, mixed with the red, so I have a link to the reference pics, you might have it too http://www.killbyte.da.ru/.
there are some good pics, to work from.
I dont know about a new ship being built, I do know that the original was rebuilt for ROTJ and then restored back for the tour.

What sorta red did you come up with Jerry? I tried lots of mixes from dull to more vibrant and they all looked odd. Ive used the red i mixed for my Y wing in the end (which seems a good match to the floquil i reckon) and just toned it down a little, i think once misted lightly with the basecoat to subdue the contrast itll look ok. Ill get most of the markings done today and see what sort of pics i can get up.

lee

hey Lee, I used guards red which looked pretty good because of the boold color.
I also used a lot of anthricite and dark ghost grey and dark green and light ghost grey.
Yes the red looks a little stark against the white, but I plan on doing an over spray of floquil grime to give it an aged look, I pray that that`ll work. if it doesnt then I`ll have to repaint everything and possibly lose a lot of detail.
What do you think? An overcoat of "grime"?? Yeah I`m geting ready to @#$%. it up.

Well heres where im at, having a brain lock really so not much progress. The red seems more intense in the pics sadly, but ill work on an overspray mist to tone down the starkness. Once ive done all the grey and yellow markings ill get to misting, then weathering with oils and pastels. Theres just so much conflicting ref out there though.

Cool project. I'm tempted to get one of these kits.

The red does look a tad too vibrant. Looks like maybe too much orange in it. Does anyone know what was used on the ANH original? I wonder if they used the same Floquil Caboose Red they used on the X-Wings?

Awesome work Ralphee.

Thank you sir, i also thought it was caboose red, which this mix seems close to the eye. Its funny i used this mix on my Y wing and it seemed less "in ya face" lol. I think maybe when i tone it down some itll blend in a little better as it did on the Y wing(i hope) lol.
Other pics i have also seem to depict a very dull red, maybe early ANH shots? As i think she was re painted after that, and other models were then built for Jedi?
