It looks like the ear cap has been trimmed too much to me.What your seeing is just the back where it meets the face and is usually covered by the caps.

I sort of meant "what is it" more like "here's something I haven't seen before"...rhetorically sort of thing. Sort of like how I haven't seen an ESB frown that didn't paint in all the gaps. I figured it was the back cap. But thanks for the replies.

Thanks for that other pic Stormtrooper.Here`s a couple of others from the shoot.One is from Corbis and the other was posted here a while ago and has different troopers but I`m sure is the same photo shoot.
