I have never tried it but you can probably curl the chip(to fit) and use a smaller battery with the same voltage.

Yeah, unless there's some sort of made to order widget, or another cheaper toy I could cannibalize one from, I think it's worth finding the cheapest Character Option sonic and just stealing one of it. Mine is so dodgy after about a year of use I'm considering replacing it and cannibalizing this one.

I'm taking a break at the moment having been Dremeling away on my best guess of an 11th Doc sonic. I've been making it out of odds and ends around the house and garage and I'm making it with a mini ink pen that will hopefully be clickable out of the bottom where the prop has the copper-ish colored end.

The emitter end is a bit of a poser and I think mine will have fixed prongs around the LED, which I've had for a while and is blue instead of the green that I now know is kosher.

I keep hoping some pictures of the toy pop up tomorrow 2/20/2010 as once seemed to be announced. Right now though I'll just keep slogging away at my pen-end bit and see what happens.

Sounds cool and all, but you probably shouldn't tell us your plans ;)

Oh, I'm in too!

Dan, Me either ,but what the heck :)

First of all: HOLY CRAP THAT IS AN AWESOME PRIZE!

Second: Elvisgump, from the sound of things you're trying to make as close a replica of Smith's sonic as you can, and that's not what the contest is about. I may be wrong, though.

Did I read that right? One of those MFX Sonics is first prize? I wasn't even thinking winning until I read that!

My aim absent any decent pictures of detail is to make something in the family of - in the spirit of - the new sonic, and to make it function as something useful to carry around like an easier and cheaper to refill pen and practical LED flashlight. And if I can miter and shoehorn in a sonic sound fx to it if I can.

It's already been pretty cool to have the Character Options sonic, but it's kinda fragile and the pen cap going on and off is a bit of a nuisance, so being able to cram a click-out pen and a switchable LED light in the upper portion is all the better.

I thought about actually making the 'pen' end an 'analog' screwdriver, but a pen is something I use daily and it's always been fun when I whipped out the C.O. Sonic to have them exclaim "What kind of pen is THAT?" to which I could reply cryptically "Gallifreyan".

I've solved the pen part and I'm going to take some pics as I try to make the white upper sleeve and then the join between the lower pen-end and upper emitter/flashlight part.

If this is a too non-custom entry idea I guess I can bow out of this thread. Hopefully someone will let me know?

1) Added another prize (thanks modeleers)

2) elvisgump -- Go ahead and enter your sonic, as long as you aren't lathing an exact replica then you are fine. And yes, you all read correctly. The prizes that are coming in are AWESOME. Members are digging deep to provide some great stuff (some out of their own collections). I hate to sound selfish, but keep them coming in.

Oh for a muse of fire! And a lathe! :lol

Sadly, no, I'm going to experiment with that $5 bond-putty stuff. I guess I'm going to find out the hard way if I can sand and Dremel it once it sets up!

As to 'exact'... Now, since there's no clear picture of the "11th" sonic and since I'm aiming in the ballpark (shape, size, colors), should I accidentally nail it am I disqualified?

By the way, could one of the the prizes BE a lathe? Or just a good talking to about what kind of lathe can I get for under $100 to turn small things under a foot long?

I've noticed the thread for the classic sonic with sound and I wonder if anyone knows if the people making those will sell just the sound bit? If it's over $20 I suppose I'd be better off just buying a C.O. sonic and cannibalizing my existing one.

Also on the prizes. I am going to list what everyone has been donating. However I am going to combine some of the donations into "Prize Packs". I will post what the Packs are more closer to the end of the contest.

Well, I've got two pieces of stuff to use for my sonic screwdriver, which acts like the main body and the "butt" of the screwdriver. I don't know if I want to take the newer SS approach, where you hold it like in the new series, or the old-school approach, with holding it in a vertical angle and have a "head" that is pointing in a forward direction to use it. But both pieces I have were actually found found items, not purchased (techically, one piece was purchased, a long time ago, but I never thought of the use of it like this until now). But the "butt" piece I have actually has a knob which could be used to represent a setting adjustor (maybe power setting adjustor?). All I need to do is come up with how I want to have this thing held so I can build the "head" piece of the screwdriver.

Man, this is fun! I never thought I'd ever have so much of a challenge with this on a design level! :D
