Constantine (2005) - Beeman's Bag of Provisions

While I'm waiting for UHD release later this year to get some decent shot of the Balthazar coin, I thought it'd be a fun project to try to recreate the bowling bag and assorted props that are shown on screen (whether you knew they were there or not). This project log will document what I find along the way and hopefully, how I'm making the props. As some of the props were never mentioned, I taking some creative liberty. As always, any ideas or feedback are welcome.

The scene with Keanu Reeves as Constantine and Max Baker as Beeman appears 18 minutes into the film(Blu-Ray disc). On screen, the following props are shown or introduced:

Don Carter Bowling Bag

Holy Brass Knuckles

2nd jar on the table. (Damascus Road Stones or Dead Sea Scroll Dust)

The scene, as scripted, was to have been longer with some of the filmed prop intros left on the editing room floor. The editing definitely adds some continuity problems as props move around the table from shot to shot.

Following this. I have a few items on this list.

Have there ever been any more detailed images of those other items from the scene, like the bullet shavings container, etc??

No, but I believe the smaller bottle is a badger old school airbrush bottle. At least that's the one I picked up.

I think the other one is a hexagonal bottle - 3oz I believe but it could be a baby food bottle. It looks shorter and fatter but the 4 ounce bottles seem too big.

Don Carter Bowling Bag

Who's got a time machine?

I was like......why is the bowling ball bag my father bought me in the 1980's being shown in this thread?

Same color and everything.

Apparently these are available as vintage. A quick search turned up one if someone wants it.

(I removed the link since it sold. Congrats Mach)

Thanks for the heads up. I grabbed that one to compare to the one I bought from ebay. The yellow looks faded on my ebay one.

The Mercari bag arrived and it's a better match for the on-screen bag. Cleaning it up tonight and will post pictures. In the mean time, I'll put up a few pics from the other on-screen items.

The cough syrup bottle

and replica. An easter egg on this prop Josh McLaglen was the Co-Producer, 1st assistant director on the movie. He most recently was executive producer on Free Guy. (The label PDF is attached to this post.) The bottle is an 8 oz amber glass bottle with a short neck and a ribbed phenolic cap.

The holy knuckle duster / "brass" used by John Constantine in the high rise scene with Balthazar are briefly shown laying on the table but never mentioned on screen.

The replica - its not an exact match but close enough for this project. I added paint and black wax to highlight the etching.

Also shown on screen but not mentioned is Moses' Shroud (or veil). Constantine lights this to repel the winged demons in the street scene with Isabel Dodson (Rachel Weisz). In the script, Beeman describes it as "Piece of the shroud Moses wore to the mountain." Moses returned from the Mount Sinai after spending 40 days and night with God. His face was so illuminated afterwards that he wore a veil so as not to scare the Israelites. I'm assuming that's what being described here as opposed to a burial shroud.

I'm guessing a veil would have been made out of flax cloth or linen. A few thousand years of aging via tea, instant coffee and wine. I'll probably give it some more weathering. Any tips are appreciated.

Lastly, the mystery bottle that is shown but never mentioned. The script mentions " Well, I've got your stone fragments from the Road to Damascus, dust from the Dead Sea Scrolls". I went with the Dead Sea Scrolls option.

The bottle is an older Badger air brush bottle. For the Dead Sea scroll dust, papyrus sheets meet coffee grinder.

After a little baking, aged scroll dust.

On the Moo toy, does anyone know where this image is from. I've found multiple copies using reverse image search that looks like it inspired the artworks but no definitive source. I'm hypothesizing it may be an Indian children's book for kids but no luck so far. I'm hoping that would lead to what's on the other sides. Any help would be appreciated.

Images found in reverse image search.

Found the image on ebay. Hopefully, I'll have it in hand sometime in May depending on the shipping from India. For the movie, I'm guessing it came from an art book or catalog that the movie art department had access to. I found a number of similar prints on ebay. This one is numbered 130. It'd be nice to know what that catalog was/is.

The next challenge will be to find the images on the other sides. There's unfortunately not much to go on. It could be other cow images to keep with the theme of the toy or other deities. On the lower right corner of the toy screenshot, you can see a tail or snake. I was thinking it might be Hanuman but I cannot find a matching image.

I did reach out to the original artist who worked on it. Super nice guy but he didn't recall what the other images were and the files were beyond recovery. I'll keep searching but creative license will likely be invoked.

I was able to snag one of the promotional matchboxes off ebay. I used the scan to redraw the match box and rescale it. I've sized it to 3 inches wide but need to check it against some screen grabs. The screen used one has a striker on one side and and a abbreviated Cleopatra Hotel logo. I'll post the screen grabs if it's helpful. I've never tried UV printing before and would like to find a place to print them. I also cobbled together a screech beetle noise maker using an Adafruit soundboard and a tilt sensor.
