CO Matt Smith Sonic modified repaint

So, I decided to modify my 11th Doctor Sonic Screwdriver, to more closeley resemble the screenused, and give the whole thing a comlete repaint.

The modidifications were to dremel out the gaps in the forks at the top, sand down the seams, fill the screwholes on the silver bars and add fake rivets to the brass parts.

I also added a dummy microswitch to the grip in the correct position for the activator, and add the silver rivet on the white handle.

The brass parts were sprayed with Plastikote Brilliant metallic Brass. The silver slats were sprayed with humbrol acrylic silver, which is actually a more chrome-like finish.

The claws were sprayed with Halfords BMW Titanium Silver, and the handle with Halfords Ford Ivory. The grip is just sprayed flat black.

The sound is still working, BTW :)

Looks little too goldy with the brass paint, but it's fantastic to see a microswitch and those little slots in the claws! :)

Aren't the claws solid instead of having those slots in inner part on the actual prop? There was a link or two I've seen the actual prop claws open and the four claws look like solid aluminum with no slots that face inward toward the emitter.

That is correct. The toy version's got the opposite claws of what it should have straight out of the box.

While its claws ought to have solid sides facing the emitter and grooves on the sides facing opposite the emitter like on the prop, it has grooved claws facing the emitter and solid opposite sides

Anyone know? ASP9mm perhaps?

Isn't copper somewhat soft and vulnerable to tarnishing?

I think it's possible to colorize aluminum so it may just be an anodized finish or whatever it's called. I'm sure they must have made a multitude of spare so tarnish or whatever isn't really an issue for the prop. There's a picture where Matt is shown with a crewman, possibly prop-master on that first day of season 5 shooting on the beach and he'd already broken the prop.

I think the reason he's holding it oddly in the scene where he 'sonics' Rivers communicator is because the head piece is no longer firmly attached to the main body.

Painting the toy is a nice idea, but it still looks painted as much as the toy looks plastic rather than metal.

I'm curious to see what the supposed die-cast version will look like. As it is the CO toy is nice having around the cubicle at work which has shown me how many closeted Whovians I work with because everyone has had to pass by and play with it for a few minutes.

That's actually one case where I wish it were more expensive!

I can't honestly see it being that impressive, at that price point.

I think all of the metal parts are copper except for the rings that are on each side of the white part, those are brass. Copper tarnishes sort blueish??? brass just sort of tarnishes mat brass color. I am not sure (I am trying to track the set down) but I think the white piece is from a bathroom towel bar set (large and medium towel bar and toilet paper holder). Those white pieces are on each side of the bars and the brass rings are actually in the same place on the sonic as they are on the towel bar. Just a theory unless I can find the towel bar set :lol.

No, it's all copper. The light is hitting differently on certain pieces, but it would look distinctly different if it were brass.

Precisely- it'd look all yellowy instead of having the nice redness that copper has :lol

It's very easy to see the copper coloring from the episodes, publicity photos, and TV interviews. Plus, if it were brass, then it'd completely clash with the new TARDIS interior.

I think you're all wrong. I think it's solid unobtanium.

The white part is from a three-handled gredunza. Very hard to find.

Looks great Birdie - did you need to prime it before you repainted?

I did prime it - I used plastic primer - the kind that's designed for bar bumpers, I go through cans of the stuff, so they must think I have a very large bumer :lol

Bit of a masking nightmare on the uer section :confused
