Hey everybody. This is my first post, so please go easy on me.
Ever since I saw this ( http://www.therpf.com/f9/11th-doctor-metal-sonic-screwdriver-build-wip-92212/ ), I've been thinking about making my own modifications to my Character Options Sonic Screwdriver toy. Let's face it, the Wow!Stuff version looks like it's gonna be a huge disappointment, but personally, I love the idea of a Sonic Screwdriver that really drives screws.
That being said, I've decided to take my 11th Doctor Screwdriver in the same direction as my 10th Doctor version: I'm adding a real screwdriver function.
I've got a pretty decent plan worked out. I'm going to purchase a second one as mod-fodder, remove the spring from the lower section, and install a multi-headed screwdriver shaft, so I can change out the bits. This will accomplish several things:
-No more spring: Without this, the toy will open more or less the way the prop does. I'll keep the extension button as a sort of safety lock, and add enough to keep the thing open via tension.
-More internal space: Once I get rid of the spring, it'll open up a good two or so inches to install the driver shaft. Which brings me to my next point...
-Screen accuracy: I don't want the shaft rotating inside the thing, so I'll need to anchor it in. I figure that's the perfect excuse to add the small screw seen on the white part of the handle of the on-screen prop.
Now, here comes the tricky part. I'm hoping that I can get hold of a replica, single-piece white handle section. If so, I plan to cut off the one on the toy using a dremel, then install a shaft of some sort to hold it all together, and simply slide the new white piece right over that. I hate how the molding lines are visible on the toy version. I'll glue the hinge cap shut, and turn the entire copper (coloured) pommel into a one-piece cap. the idea is, you remove the cap to expose the screwdriver bit. I thought about just leaving the hinge cap, but since the screwdriver needs to rotate, i figure the cap would get in the way.
Now, here's where I could use some advice.
-The handle screw: Enclosed are a couple pictures of the prop Screwdriver, showing the momentary button and white handle screw.
See where the screw is in relation to the hinge and the momentary button? Looks like it's different in each shot. Which is the correct position? Or do you think it's the sort of thing that moves around with regular maintenance (read "when Matt Smith break it")?
EDIT: I almost forgot to mention, does anybody else notice the screw that seems to be IN the jade bulb at the tip?
