Close Encounters mask question...

I have a question about this Close Encounters head...

Does anybody think that, if I were to loan this screen used mask out to some able hand-That a replica could be made without destroying this original one?
I'd like a fresh one to use in a display (on a full body mannequin) and not have to use this original and brittle mask. This mask is so simple in design, but I feel that for a replica this simple-to feel correct, it should be taken directly from an original.

A two-piece stone mold could be taken without "actual" damage to the original. However, you will have stone residue to clean off of it. But just for safety, I would not do it. Having the original as reference will be a great asset for a resculpt. Did that come from the Ackerman collection?

I can't really offer any advice with regard to casting this but I noticed that the neck is a bit frayed and brittle. If you were ever interested in preserving it you should contact Tom Spina - he specializes in such work.

I only throw that out there because that really is a great piece of cinematic history you have there!

Man that thing is scary - and the monkey doesn't help. I'll be up all night now.

LOL I totally agree, it is oddly scary. Very cool piece of movie history you have there.

Stone heats up, so i'm not sure that would be a good idea. And you have to have some kind of mold release. Not sure how that would effect it either. You could possibly make an alginate mold and make a clay press from it. You could then make a stone mold from that.

I'd consult with Tom Spina and see what he has to say.

HAHAHAHA!!
Why are so many people afraid of this alien and E.T.?

Hmmm...I'm surprised. I hoped there was some obvious way to cast this thing without damaging it.

Thanks for the suggestions

I'd love to have a copy for mine as well. I agree with the earlier post. The original will serve wonderfully as reference and shouldn't be touched.

If you are able to make a few replicas of this, I'd sure be in for one..It'll go perfectly with a "Puck" figure I'm having sculpted for me. Gotta love CE3K :)

It might be possible to make a silicone mold of your original, then produce a hard copy which can be remoulded with stone or fibreglass to end up with a new, latex copy.

You should have a word with Tom as he specialises in this kind of stuff, but my suggestion above might work - unless anyone can see any problems with it?

I'd love a copy once you get it figured out, please start an interest list and put me on it!

Aside from wanting a replica of this I have a question. I've seen a few of these masks, and most of them have the blue eyes like yours. I've also seen one with solid black eyes. Anyone know if they made these two kinds, or is the one with all black eyes a repro?

The Burman Studios who made the real masks for CE3K also makes the replicas with the dark eyes. These also look more greyish instead of the screenused ones which have a more darker brown/green color like the one you see here. These masks were made for the 7 and 8 year old girls hired by Spielberg to play the alien creatures. Some of the masks didn't fit that good so they had to cut out the nostrills to see through that. The masks with the darker eyes you mentioned still are the closest you can get to the real deal so grab one when you can. I've seen them for over 1000 dollars so although a replica, pretty pricy stuff.
Hope this info helps. Check our CE3K site!! :cool

No, no silicone! Stone is iffy too. I'd look for something much more delicate and forgiving, like alginate. Treat it like a life cast.

This August will be 3 years ago for this thread.

I wonder what happened?

I wouldn't recommend ANY surface contact mold be taken. The chances of damageing the original are just too high. The only safe way to make a duplicate would be to have a digital scan made and a replica master milled, cleaned up and then cast. Time consuming and $$$. But safe.
