I wanted to share some of the weathering techniques as well as my chrome paint job which is bit of a departure from what most folks have done thus far on this particular helmet.
Chrome base.
Alclad II lacquer gloss black, airbrushed on. Let cure for 24 hours. Then airbrush over with Alclad II Chrome lacquer. Let cure for 24 hours. The final result is literally a mirror finish, that can take acrylic paint very nicely. However, this type of paint was designed for use on small scale models. It has come off in a few small areas where I had a tape mask, but for the most part it's very solid. Plus, as long as the black base is still there, it can continue to take additional touch-ups if need be. This paint must be airbrushed on.
Dark green stripe, Polly Scale acrylic Earth, Ger. RLM 73 Green, PRR Brunswick Green - all airbrushed on. The paint chip areas were masked off with Windsor & Newton Liquid mask.
Inset green areas. Polly Scale acrylic Earth, Panzer Olive Green all airbrushed on.
Gray mandible and back helmet areas, Polly Scale acrylic RLM 76 Light gray.
White (lightest areas), Polly Scale acrylic Reefer white w/Testors camo flat gray mixed in.
Dark gray areas (crown of helmet, ears and frown), Tamiya Dark Gray acrylic.
Weathering
I weather now almost exclusively with slate gray and natural Fullers Earth, lightly dusted on with hairspray, then tweaked and augmented with wet/dry paper towels and various size brushes. Since taking these pictures I've tweaked the weathering even more to give the illusion of depth and even more contrast. Better pictures to come.
Enjoy!!
