Male Poly head measures approx 28cm high with a circumference of approx 60cm

Well, is the circumberence of your head about 60cm? (mines about 58cm) If so, then it should be a good armature.

Clay... use oil based clay. There are many brands and I think I've seen the Hunters here use just about every one of them.

For larger sculpts, a water based clay (such as WED clay) might be a bit faster, although you have to take care it doesn't dry out.
