Classic Star Trek Phaser Video

Hi guys

A few years ago, I documented an original screen-used
Star Trek "hero" Phaser prop. We took tons of pix, and
about a half hour of pretty high-res video. This documentation
was the basis for my replicas, including the one MR purchased
from me to aid in the creation of their TOS Phaser. It is
also what enabled me to create the full-tilt hero Hand Phaser
kit I am currently offering. Below is a link to a portion of the
video. It does not have the audio, and is not at full res, but
I wanted to try and share it with you as sort of a test to see
how many people can view it via this link.

*Edit* Here's a new link-it's kinda small, but it seems to
be working. I'll update it once we work out the bugs.

Please give it a shot, and tell me if you are able to view it.

Thanks-enjoy:)

Very, VERY slow loading and the default size of the video is larger than my browser window so the top and bottom are chopped off. Took almost 5 minutes to get to the part where you opened the P1 up. Did I mention that it was slow loading? ;)

OH MY GOD! Are you trying to stream a 263 Meg Flash file? :confused

No wonder I couldn't get past the first 20 seconds of the video... :)

Thanks for sharing John. Unfortunately, the video was extremely slow loading with lengthy pauses between a short 10 seconds of actual motion. It also loaded too big, top and bottom of the video was cut-off.

FYI...I'm using the Safari browser, running Mac OS 10.4.10, viewing on a 15" PowerBook G4 over a high-speed DSL broadband internet connection.

That's odd that it would be cut off on your Mac. Size is just fine on my eMac. The problem is that it's a 264 MB .swf file.

Maybe a different codec and definitely a faster host, possibly YouTube? I'm not sure that .swf (Flash) encoding are the best option for such large source files.

I don't know much about this stuff, but my
friend Mike is working on it. Hopefully everbody
will be able to view it real soon.

Thanks.

Thanks-I'll relay that to Mike.
This little test is only about 5 minutes
of a 30 minute long video:lol

Hopefully we can make this work smoothly
so I can share it all with you guys.

In the meantime, here are some screen-grabs:

FLV is how YouTube serves up its videos. You can stream the video even at full screen resolution, it should work well.

I also note that the video as it is now is "interlaced", meaning that there are interference patterns caused by the two sets of lines needed to
display one frame of video

The video should be "de-interlaced".

Actually, if you don't want to mess with Flash, the video could compressed as H.264... this is a popular codec that delivers great quality and performance.

John,
i have a question.
i have a dvd showing the hero inspection from years ago that i have looked closely at.
i see the bottom of the P1 open and do not see a switch in the bottom internals.

how was the GOW bulb cut on.

Here's a pic of the prototype I made for my kit:

See the switch near the back? Those two "blades"
are pushed together by the wedge on the thumbwheel.

The GOW comes on when the thumbwheel is rolled fully forward. There's no switch. (the "trigger" button on the bottom of the hand phaser is non-functional, it's just decorative).

(well jlong's answer is a bit more informative :lol )

AAHHHH now i see.
I had thought the pivot for moving the emitter were the GOW contacts.
i had figured out the contacts moved by the thumb wheel into a firing position by the wheel {not touching} then pushing the button forced them together and lit the bulb.
i was looking at the wrondg end of the phaser. :lol

thanks for the info.:thumbsup

since i have over a dozen different TOS Phasers by different makers, i definatly see this kit {THE OPTIMUS PRIME} in my future.:lol

HEY a name for the run,

The JLong TOS OPTIMUS PRIME PHASER (y)thumbsup:thumbsup
